Where does the saiga antelope get its name from?

Asked by Janka (2187points) April 16th, 2011

I tried googling it but failed. Why is the animal called ‘saiga’? What language is that originally, or is it a place, or what?

It’s the russian name for antelope and has been used as the genus name. The full name is Saiga tatarica where tatarica comes from the are of Russia (Tatary) where they are found.
