How can I stop my cat from continuing this new behavior?
Okay cat people, put your heads together with me.
I have a leaky dishwasher. One of these days I will replace it, but in the meanwhile I keep a dish towel folded under the leaky corner.
Recently my cat has taken to stealing the towel once it is wet and dragging it around the floor yowling like a maniac. (He is a really vocal cat anyhow, that part isn’t unusual.)
Once he moves it away from the dishwasher, he leaves it alone. He loses interest. As soon as I put it back, he goes and takes it. I try to catch him off guard, but he only takes it when I’m not looking. I have to clean up a big puddle on my kitchen floor every day because he will NOT leave it alone. How do I get him to knock it off?

I would try to weigh it down with something too heavy for him to budge.
Maybe he will lose interest after a few tries.
Put some hot sauce on it?
@lucillelucillelucille ohh, that is a good idea! I actually have a set of French doors that I have to keep a decorative canister in front of, because he learned how to open them. If that canister isn’t blocking them, he instantly opens the door. If it deterred him from that, it might work for the towel, too. Good call. I don’t know why I didn’t think of that.
He might not stop. A heavy object is a great idea.
If he wants a towel or an old sweater, you may want to give him one…or a Purr Pad He may want to utilize it for a private matter ;)
Our most vocal cat did this private matter with his blanket and his Purr pad at least once a day :0)
I really don’t know how you can get him to “knock it off”....but I know that I would love to see this on a “YouTube” clip….seriously.The idea of a yowling cat dragging a wet towel all over the floor…well…..the visual made me laugh.
(Oh, I’m sorry…really, as I know you are distressed about this…I’m useless…but I still think you have a celebrity in the making….Lol!)
@DarlingRhadamanthus he is definitely a celebrity in the making. I’ve had cats all my life, but I have never met a cat with more personality than this one. I am constantly saying that I need a video camera or a phone with video capabilities. He would be an instant YouTube sensation, he’s a total ham.
Use orange peel, put some under the washer….. This will discourage him…. Really. :-/
Well….there you go, @ANef_is_Enuf…..dust off that video camera….and start filming! :)
And put a donation box next to it to fund your new dishwasher! :)
@Scooby until my basset hound eats it. ;)
My cat used to drag my slippers around while yowling loudly. She stole them from my bedside every night when the light went off and carried them by the toe as if it were the scruff of a kitten’s neck. I’d find them somewhere in the house the next day.
In your place I would try (a) offering a sacrificial towel, (b) using something else to plug the leak, and (c) anchoring it with something too strong for the cat. And I would not expect any diversionary or preventive strategy to work.
You have one weird cat there @ANef_is_Enuf! My sister had a cat that would deliberately pull at lumps of weed in her pond, dragging great lengths of it out of the water. How come your beast loves this wet towel? Sorry not to have much to offer, only being fascinated, but really, the creature is a weird one! Don’t ya just love ‘em lol
Oh, and he is truly beautiful too. The worst ones usually are!
Cinder block. Put it underneatha a cinder block. LOL
I think that’s cute as hell, but I can see how it could get annoying. I’ve used tinfoil to keep cats out of plants. I wonder if a strip of it along the edge that he can get his teeth in would work, or a few drops of vinegar.
Aluminum foil works for one cat, but not the other-worth a shot, but an annoyance.
Put flea power all over the dish towel.
I heard citrus smells will keep a cat away. Maybe spray it with something that smells citrusy? Oh! He is so freaking cute! :D
Thanks, he’s my baby. I’ll try some citrus scented stuff, and if that doesn’t work, I’ll go for putting something heavy on the towel.
He loves anything that makes noise, especially crinkly sounds, so I think foil might increase the attraction. Might give it a shot, anyhow. Anything beats the soaking wet floor every day until we get a new dishwasher. :)
Thanks all.
@Aster he is 5.
@Scooby if I didn’t stop her, she would probably eat herself to death. :P
I like your cat btw, much like my old lady, my cat that is…. I’ll try find a pic :-/
Here she is :-/
Bassets are just four legged dyson’s :-/ propper dust busters…..
Thanks, she’s fourteen this month :-/ also very vocal….
@ANef_is_Enuf @Scooby do you think there is Siamese in your cats’ background? I had a much loved, vocal kitty who made it to 19 and was smart as smart. She looked like your and had a siamese grandma.
@faye it could be. I have made the same observation about Siamese and Himalayan cats, though. They are talkers. :)
I have thought that too, looking at Jas’s profile, I think there has to be Siamese somewhere in there, the fact she’s always talking too & she has quite a loud purrrrrrrrr….. Here she is again :-/
And again, always has to be in :-/
