If someone from fluther friend requests you on facebook does it frustrate you when they don't identify themselves?

Asked by Judi (40025points) April 19th, 2011 from iPhone

I’m pretty picky about the friend requests I accept. I don’t do farmville or any of the silly games and use facebook for keeping up with friends. I consider it more private life and fluther more public A few jellies are so special to me that I have included them. That means that a lot of people pop up that we have “in common” because of fluther.
It is really frustrating when I get a friend request from someone who’s name I don’t recognize because it’s different from their fluther name. I hate to be rude and decline the request, but if they don’t include a message telling me who they are I don’t know if I want to include them or not.
Am I a lone wierdo or do others feel this way too? It just bugs me!

I just message them asking who they are. Before that, I’ll sometimes go through their profile (and other) pix to see if any look familiar. If I’m really not sure I want to friend them or not I don’t message them, and ignore the request.

Yes, it frustrates me. I sometimes write them back and ask who they are, or write a mutual friend and ask who they are.

Oh, @JLeslie , that “mutual friend” thing is a good idea. I’ll try that.

marinelife's avatar

I always send a message asking “Do I know you from Fluther?”

Rarebear's avatar

I only “friend” people on FB who use their real names.

jonsblond's avatar

I ask a mutual friend also before I decide to accept the request.

janbb's avatar

YES!!!!

@Rarebear The problem is on FB, they are using their real names but not their Fluther names.

JLeslie's avatar

Slightly off topic, I wish I could remember exactly who my facebook fluther friends are. I know most of them, but a few of them I am not sure which real name matches up with the fluther username.

janbb's avatar

Yeah – me too. I thought someone was @chyna for donkey’s years and it wasn’t.

Rarebear's avatar

@janbb I see. Generally I keep FB and Fluther separate, although there are a few exceptions.

I think there was a flurry of Fluther FB friending a few years ago.

I don’t add them and wait until they do.

I have a few BI (Fluther/FB) friends . . .

Seelix's avatar

It hasn’t happened to me yet, but I don’t accept any friend requests from anyone I don’t know.

@MissAnthrope I want to be YOUR FB friend . . .

downtide's avatar

My FB is very tightly locked down and restricted to only people with whom I’m actually friends with in “real life”. Online friends are directed to my Twitter instead. No online friend would even be able to find my FB because I never tell anyone online what my real name is.

Jude's avatar

That would be a yes.

SpatzieLover's avatar

I do the same as @downtide…but I have made a couple of exceptions for jellies I have known for almost a decade now we met at another site first

chyna's avatar

@janbb You would recognize Molly! (What is a donkey year?)

janbb's avatar

@chyna Beats the shit out of me. It’s something I picked up from the English.

I will usually check to see who their friends are, and if we share a lot of fluther people, I figure that person is from here.
I really don’t want to put the Butters pic as my screen image on FB. My email address is visible, which does read filmfann, but they would have to look for that.

cookieman's avatar

Yup. But I’ll just send along a message asking, “How do I know you?” It’s usually a fellow Flutherer (not all of whom I’ve accepted. I have to really know you here on Fluther).

Although, one time this happened – I asked, “Do I know you?” – thinking it was a Flutherer, and the girl responds, “I was your eighth-grade girlfriend. We went to the semi-formal together.”

I didn’t recognize her at all. :^(

@cprevite Want to elaborate? What had changed so much about her? :-)

cookieman's avatar

@chyna: Actually she looked pretty much the same. My memory is just that bad.

I was expecting you to say she grew boobs.
