Are eggs safe past the expiration date?

Asked by ItalianPrincess1217 (11979points) April 19th, 2011 from iPhone

I accidentally ate 2 sunny side up eggs today and when I checked the date on the carton it said expiration was 2 days ago. I’m pregnant so naturally I’m a little concerned. Any advice?

I’ve eaten them older than that, but I’m also not pregnant. No ill effects so far…Bok! Bok!

All kidding aside, I think within two days you should be fine…

If the eggs have been in 36 to 40 degree F storage the are fine

Some food experts say they are good up to 5 weeks after expiry date, if above temp maintained.

Sunny side up are not recommended for consumption by pregnant women, same with sushi and other raw meat items.

How soon would I feel any effects from eating bad eggs?

Two day should be fine. Next time, run a sink of water of put the eggs in there. As long as they are touching the bottom, they’re still good to eat. Ideally, you want them to lay down but if they stand they’re still alright but eat them quick. If they float, toss them out. DON’T break them though. They’ll probably stink at that point.

Salmonella will be 12 to 72 hours, if that is what your are asking.

Two days should be fine. Eggs actually last a lot longer than you’d think, with the expiration date and all. Ditto what @Randy said about how to check if your eggs are still good. Submerge them completely in water. If they are lying on the bottom, completely on their sides, they are A-OK! If the bottom of the egg is touching the bottom of the container and standing straight up, it means you’re edging toward the eggs not being good anymore. If they float, toss ‘em.

The science behind it is that as the eggs go bad, gases build up within the shell, causing them to be more and more buoyant.

We give expired but refrigerated eggs to our doggie friends. They are always thrilled. I myself wouldn’t eat eggs much after a week past the date.

And I should add that here we buy eggs just after they have been removed from under the chicken. They are not sitting in storage for four weeks, which is often the case.

This is helpful. Apparently salmonella does not cross the placenta, so the fetus is not at risk. Hopefully you won’t get sick (and the odds are good that you will not).

Make sure you store your eggs well.

Generally speaking, things like expiration dates are designed with a safety margin.

You’re totally fine.

You should be fine within a week of the expiration date. The Illinois Department of Agriculture says this:

“Is it safe to use eggs after the “sell by” or expiration date has passed?
Yes. “Sell by” or expiration codes indicate freshness, not necessarily wholesomeness. Since egg quality deteriorates over time, “sell by” dates are used to ensure the grade specified on the label is accurate. If stored properly, eggs may be safely consumed several weeks beyond the expiration date.”

You should be fine! Congratulations on the baby! :)

Most of the date on food are quality related, not safety. But I’d watch out for eggs unless you know the source.. @ItalianPrincess1217 You must be getting close to the due date? Congrats

ItalianPrincess1217's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Thanks! I’m 19 weeks. I still have a little ways to go but it’s flown by so far.
Thanks all for the helpful information. So far I feel fine so hopefully the eggs were just fine.

Last weekend I ate eggs that were nearly a month beyond the pull date on the carton and I am still here to tell the tale.

Don’t worry at all. Usually you can go a couple weeks past the date if they are kept in the refrigerator. What you need to remember is to cook the eggs through. Even if the egg had salmonella, if you cook them well, it kills the bacteria just like when you cook chicken. Don’t eat any raw cookie dough, or sunny side up with a raw yellow. This is true all the time, not just when you are pregnant. You can buy pasteurized eggs if you want to eat them raw. I know you just had some sunny side up, still don’t worry, but in he future use the pasteurized ones for that. When you hear about people getting sick from meat or eggs, if they had just been cooked it would not have mattered that they were contaminated.

It is true that eggs that float are bad.

If an egg is bad, you can usually smell it from a mile away! The nose knows (I just read that in another answer and it seems appropriate here as well.)

usually they are . I would say don’t go more than 3 days over. It also depends if you keep them in the fridge. If you always keep them in the fridge you can probably use them 5 days after the expiry date.

It also depends what you want to use them for. If you are baking or using them pure I would say don’t risk it.

It you plan on cooking them throughly you may still be able to use them 3 to 5 days after the expiry date if you keep them in the fridge.

Don’t worry. If the eggs were bad you would know it when you cracked them. Your body wouldn’t let them go down either.

It’s pretty nasty when eggs foul.

If you didn’t notice anything off, and you enjoyed the taste, odds are they were juuuust fine.
