How do I get my 12.5 month old twins to drink from a sippy cup?

(both nursed – one still does, both take bottles as well – one holds her own bottle, other won’t)

They will when they’re ready. Everyone’s small motor skills develop a little differently. Sucking on a nipple is different from being able to grasp an object. Don’t fret it. Twins, wow.

Welcome to fluther @sunflowermommy. I second what @gailcalled said, both about their motor skills and about the wow.

Hang in there – it’ll come with time.

Skip the sippy, go straight to a straw…you then won’t have to do the weaning process fro ma sippy or bottle.
There are sippy cups with straws like that or like this straw sippy
I’ve used both (I prefer the second link) for my kids. Or you could teach them to use a straw with just a regular straw and cup.
My 13 month old does fine with it, and we still use it for my almost 4yo. (just so he doesn’t make a mess in the living room or car)

Early Intervention (EI) recommends using a straw cup more than the regular sippy because it helps with their speach later by developing the muscles to pronouce the o sounds. My daughter is delayed from having infantile spasms and cowden’s syndrome and in speaking to EI they say they really don’t like kids using the sippy cups because it does not change much from using a bottle. Nubby makes some great ones. This is the one I used because the straw was thicker and easier for her to suck on. I hope this helps, even with all her global delays she was totally off the bottle by 18mths which for her is great since she is not yet walking and she just turned 2.

My son went from the nipple to the straw, and quickly began holding a glass we use kids sized jelly jars which don’t break when dropped

I’d say go to the straw next.

The straw sippy cup is recommended for the development of their speech. If you will fix them a healthy smoothie in the cup. Let them have a good taste of the smoothie and see that you are putting it in their cups and they will figure out how to use that straw sippy cup to get that delicious smoothie! It will help them learn to suck on the straw with something thick to drink. Otherwise I think it startles them with to much to fast (like not knowing how to make the bike stop). A thicker drink until they are comfortable with holding and sucking out of the straw and then you can slowly add thinner liquids to drink.
