Spring has sprung. What on earth is your yummy baked beans recipe?.

Asked by Aster (20028points) April 20th, 2011

Not that anyone eats baked beans whenever I see them but here’s mine: fry 4 slices of bacon until almost crisp; drain and leave grease in pan. In bowl of canned beans, add the bacon grease, a teaspoon of mustard, a squirt of pancake syrup or molasses (but not much), a handful of brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of ketchup and a handful of dried minced onion. Stir well. Place bacon slices on top and bake uncovered at 350 for half an hour.

Bush’s: stick them in a pan, heat up, and serve. Delish.

My recipe isn’t much different from yours @Aster. I like to saute an onion and clove of garlic in the bacon grease, add a dash of Sriracha and a little bit of root beer to sweeten the beans (I don’t use syrup or molasses). I was out of brown sugar once when I was making beans and thought I would try root beer as a substitute. It worked really well.

Lots of molasses and brown sugar, a fair amount of yellow mustard, onions, sauteed in a bit of butter or margarine to replace the pork products, cooked in a crock pot or baked in a slow oven until really thick. Served with homemade cornbread, preferably baked in an iron skillet :>)

To the beans I add pieces of thick cut brown sugar cured bacon, ketchup (made with sugar, vinegar and spices – no artificial ingredients or HFCS), spicy brown mustard, Worchestershire sauce, diced onions, brown sugar. Bake for 20 minutes with slices of bacon on top.

My mom has this neato bean pot. And because I’m a vegetarian she will start with 2 cans of vegetarian baked beans, either Trader Joe’s or Heinz brand, then add a bit of dry mustard, maybe about 2 Tablespoons of diced onion, some brown sugar and maybe a splash of molasses and let that all bake in the bean pot for a half hour on low. It’s so good!

Thanks for making me crave that now!

I mix a small can of baked beans with the minced beef when I’m making a cottage pie. Its more a winter dish though.

@downtide What is the difference between a Shepherd’s pie and a Cottage Pie?

@Kardamom Shepherds pie is made with lamb, cottage pie is beef.
