GMail: Why am I suddenly unable to be logged in under two usernames at once?

Asked by augustlan (47745points) April 21st, 2011

I have several GMail accounts for different purposes. In the past, I’ve always been able to use two (or more) at once, opening each in a new tab (Firefox).

My GMail account on the Fluther domain just received an update, and now it won’t let me stay logged in under that account and any other Gmail account at the same time. It seems I have to choose just one login at a time. Very frustrating.

Does anyone know why this is happening and/or how to fix it?

Wow, I’ve never been able to use both at the same time, I always have to sign out and back in, and if I’m signed into my Fluther one and I log into youtube it signs me out and back into my regular one. How did you even do it in the first place? No fair!

https://www.google.com/accounts/ManageAccount

Under Multiple sign-in make sure it is toggled to ON.

I noticed that a while back too, @math_nerd is right!

@shrubbery I think it had to do with the fact that one of them was an @fluther.com email address, on Gmail.

@math_nerd That worked. Thank you so much! Thanks for seconding it, smo. :)

Tangential:

If you want to have just one gmail account but have the ability to give different-looking addresses out so you can apply rules easily, try this, insert: YourName+someLabelHere@gmail.com

For example, assuming your gmail name is something like PrincessButtercup@gmail.com, then just use the + sign and whatever label you want after your name and before the @ sign, like PrincessButtercup+fluther@gmail.com

The email will go to your PrincessButtercup inbox, but you will now have the ability to create a rule to act on the ”+fluther” part.

This +label functionality is part of the standard email specification, it’s not just a gmail thing. Only problem is, you might occasionally encounter some web forms that won’t allow the + sign.

Update:

This works when I send email to my gmail account. But it does not when I try it to my corporate email. So, the spec isn’t uniformly supported in all circumstances. :-\

I have never been able to keep two Gmail accounts open at the same time, either.

Not only that…if I log out of one, and log into another one….I will start typing and then it will bump me out (everytime!) until I log in….again. This happens every time I do this.

My answer is of no real use, I know…but just to let you know that others are also having difficulties with this.

@DarlingRhadamanthus Following @math_nerd‘s advice did the trick for me. Hope it works for you, too!
