Broken. You need a new one. I guess it could be a loose wire.

@JLeslie If it is a loose wire, couldnt I just replace the wire or reconnect the wire?

If it was my odometer, I wouldn’t “fix” it until you want to sell it.

@Cruiser
What if I need an odometer to tell me how fast I am going and have no intention of selling…at least for a long time.

@radcliff I would think you can just fix the wire if that is the prolem. When an odometer stopped working on one of our cars it was the odometer itself that was not working. It was a very old car though, not a digital odometer.

It is illegal to disconnect an odometer I think, so I would go ahead and get it fixed. But, that’s me. I tend to be a rule follower.

Yeah, certainly if your speedometer and odometer both are not working, you need to correct it. You need to know what speed you are going,

I am so sorry to have said odometer when I meant SPEEDOMETER!!!!

My speedometer has stopped working! ;(

I think my answer is the same. Either the speedometer thingy is broken, or a wire. Maybe a fuse? But I think if it were a fuse other things wouldn’t be working.

Maybe $600 to 800 to replace the entire speedo head or if you’re lucky it is only the sensor on the transmission.

@Tropical_Willie
Holy cow, I hope it’s something small and how do I check this stuff myself?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

If you think you can take the speedo head out yourself, there maybe a speedo repair shop locally or find one on the web. Get a Chilton repair manual.

Many if not most speedometers are actuated by a cable that is attached to the transmission. This cable breaks often enough that any decent repair shop should have spares. If the cable breaks then both speedo and odometer will stop working. Check the cable before you go messing with the instrument cluster. With luck you won’t have to disassemble the dash, but no guarantees.
