So it's been a couple months since Twitter took over; Has it changed your Fluther experience?

Asked by Foolaholic (5804points) April 23rd, 2011

Personally, my fluthering hasn’t been altered in any way. But if you’ve had other experiences, I love to hear them.

I’ve noticed the absence of several of the old timers whose posts I always looked forward to reading.

wundayatta's avatar

I haven’t noticed a change.

seazen_'s avatar

@Buttonstc I don’t think they left because of the change – but they are missed. Except for the Twits Tweets.

Twitter didn’t take over; our founders left fulltime work on Fluther for lucrative employment at Fluther. Fluther is still an independently owned entity. I don’t feel as “into” Fluther as I formerly was, but that is due more to the absence of several Jellies than a correlation with the twitterbandonment.

Haven’t been around that long, but I don’t think I have noticed anything.

janbb's avatar

Too late to edit: Should read “left Fluther for lucrative employment at Twitter.” Sorry.

If I recall correctly, there has been one technical hiccup since the change, and there was good communication about its status and when it was fixed, just as it has been done in the past.

Seelix's avatar

Yup, no change for me either.

@janbb got it right. Twitter did not take over. They mearly bought off our founders.
I don’t think fluther has suffered much for it, other than the contributions of Ben and Andrew. As for contributer abandonment, we have always had that.
I still love this place, and hope to continue as long as they want to put up with my shit.

Not gonna lie, I panicked when everyone packed up and went over to fluther. I contacted everyone on here I wanted to maintain contact with in a hurry and hunkered down and waited for fluther to crumble into the dust. It did not and now I feel silly for panicking. :)

I’ve found it to be the same as it was, and I like that.

The only thing I’ve been noticing is an influx of new users, and relationship questions like ’‘does he like me’’ and stuff. But it hasn’t changed my experience much, and with said influx, we’ve also been getting a lot of cool new members that are a fine addition to the community. But yeah, some old timers seem to have disappeared, although I’m unsure if that has anything to do with Twitter since I noticed that before the Twitter thing happened. Ah well, people come and go, like ninjas in the night.

More details on the Twitterbandonment, please?

janbb's avatar

@ninjacolin The Founders and technical team were hired by Twitter. Augustlan is still employed as community manager and Fluther is still owned by Ben and Andrew.

wow, when did it happen?

Here’s the announcement on the blog. Apparently it was posted at 9:29 a.m., if that’s a useful time reference. Personally, I’d rather see the month, day, and year.

Looking at this again now, I wonder about the headline, which says that Twitter is acquiring Fluther rather than just the Fluther team. Also, what’s up with those comments? They seem to have nothing whatsoever to do with the blog post. And I can’t seem to see a way to access earlier comments.

As for my fluther experience, I don’t see it as much changed. I like the fact that the site isn’t being constantly “improved,” and kind of wish that moratorium had occurred a few stages earlier, although some pending business was left unfinished. I don’t think the departures of some former regulars had anything to do with this transition.

This is what PC Magazine said on 21 December 2010…....

Twitter on Tuesday announced that it has acquired software company Fluther, which describes itself as a “free Q&A collective that specializes in getting fast answers from the right people.”

“During our conversations with Fluther’s team, we were continually impressed by their technical talent, entrepreneurial spirit, and much of the thinking behind the question-and-answer product they’ve spent the last couple of years building,” Twitter spokeswoman Carolyn Penner wrote in a blog post.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. Going forward, the Fluther team will help Twitter users discover the most relevant content on the micro-blogging site.

The acquisition adds four new engineers and one designer to the Twitter team: Ben Finkel, Andrew McClain, Tim Trueman, Richard Henry, and Cameron Dutro.

The Fluther.com product will remain separate from Twitter.

“We are planning to keep Fluther.com up and running, as it is, as a separate project from Twitter,” Fluther said in its own blog post. “We won’t be developing it as we’re now focused on Twitter, but Lisa will continue on as community manager and maintainer.”

Fluther.com allows users to ask questions in general and social sections. The general section has strict guidelines and is focused on helping those who want to get clear answers. The social section has more relaxed guidelines and encourages users to express their opinions.

The company promised more details about the future of Fluther in the coming weeks.

“We love Twitter, and we think their wonderful culture and technology are a perfect match for our team. It’s the ideal place for us to keep building things that people love,” Fluther concluded.

I still think of Ben Franklin et al when people talk about “the founders.” But I don’t notice any difference, people come and go, some I miss, others I say good riddance! And I am sure it would be the same if I left although I hesitate to consider which would be in the majority! :-)

maybe it was an april fools joke they forgot to take down.

gm_pansa1's avatar

Nope. I haven’t noticed any difference at all.

That quirk on the blog (listing a time rather than a date) was recently brought to my attention. I have no idea how to fix it, but have put it on the ‘fix it’ list.

erichw1504's avatar

No, my experience on #fluther hasn’t changed at all.

LukeFonFabre's avatar

Twitter owns this website now? No wonder why fluther looks so familiar.

Seelix's avatar

Fluther has looked like this since long before Twitter had anything to do with the founders.

LukeFonFabre's avatar

@Seelix Oh, Fluther inspired Twitter’s layout design. I get it now, thanks!

Seelix's avatar

@LukeFonFabre – I don’t think that’s what happened, either. Fluther and Twitter have both existed for years, and a couple of months ago, the founders of Fluther were hired by Twitter. So unless Twitter’s layout has changed within the last two months or so, I doubt Ben and Andrew had anything to do with it. I don’t use Twitter, so I wouldn’t know whether the layout has changed.

LukeFonFabre's avatar

@Seelix I have Twitter account and their layout is very similar to Fluther- so simple and plain, yet so creative.

Berserker's avatar

Completely off topic, but I’ve never, ever been on Twitter. I don’t know what it even looks like lol.

erichw1504's avatar

@LukeFonFabre If you think Twitter and Fluther look the same, then you’d probably think CNN and Rotten Tomatoes look the same as well.
