If you never lived in America or if you used to live here and had to define Americans as a whole in four or five words what words would you use to describe them? I’m speaking of their personalities and that sort of thing.

I’ve always seen American as very patriotic (as opposed to Canadians). That’s the only trait that I can apply to the majority.
My view as an ex-pat:
Patriotic. Optimistic. Self-promoting. Entrepreneurial. Insular (as far as world affairs). Hard-working. Proud.
How do I see that Europeans/Brits view Americans?
Ignorant. Overweight. Superficial. Spoiled. Boastful. War-Mongering. Imperialist. Capitalistic. Hedonistic.
Oooo, what fun, stereotyping. Shall we move on to racial or sexual stereotyping after we’ve finished with this one?
@gmander…......The question asked for stereotypes…generalizations….not necessarily the truth. The first part are my own views.
Some of these (second part) are offensive (to me as an American) and yet, these generalizations (unfortunately) do exist…and are often perpetrated by Fleet Street here.
Don’t shoot the messenger.
@gmander
It was just what we thought.
I’m a Canadian, and I frequently travel to America. I know that not everyone is patriotic, but I do get the sense of a nation that has a “togetherness” of some sorts. In Canada, I only feel “togetherness” when a hockey game is on (no lie). Everyone is different though!
@naivete You should also see us at the 50/50 draw at the Legion on Friday nights!
The Americans I have met have been the politest and most welcoming people I have had the pleasure of meeting.
I see them on the telly mostly. Oh & at the cinema, a mixed bunch it has to be said ;¬}
I totally agree with @Leanne1986 !
Here’s one generalization: Americans are encouraged to think big.
Americans are encouraged to think big. And I think this is a good thing.
