Top 5 memorable instrumental movie scores on your list would be?
Thinking of just instrumental musical movie scores which would you say are the top 5 automatically recognized scores in 60% of the planet, and the top 5 in just your nation?
I say world wide (not necessarily in order);
• Jaws
• Star Wars
• The Godfather
• 2001 A Space Odyssey.
• Laurence of Arabia?
Here in the US:
• Star Wars
• Jaws
• The Sting
• Jurassic Park
• 2001 A Space Odyssey.
It seems people know those scores even if they never watch the movie. But I have not seen every movie so I am sure in your neck of the woods they may notice other movies more. What do you think they are?

There is only one in my list, and that’s The Crow.
James Bond theme has to be in there somewhere.
@Lightlyseared How could I forget Bond? I would have to bump Laurence and go with Bond I believe Thunderball or Never say Never, one of the early non-singing ones, if it was just a theme and not a score then I will have to reinstate Laurence :-)
Taxi Driver and the Godfather, I think instead of either Jaws, The Sting or 2001. I dug them and all, but 2001 and The Sting took already prominent music and just used it, which worked for the cinematic effect (especially in 2001, the music was essential to the entire movie), but I don’t think it should count. And Jaws, while being original, just isn’t much fun to listen to outside of Jaws.
@ddude1116 Everyone I know when they hear that bass they think SHARK!!!
I have to add Out of Africa . . .
There was also an obscure movie entitled Country(film) that had a beautiful soundtrack which I would love to locate again (had an old cassette that I wore out from playing it so much).
I actually found Country on Amazon (for 34.00 used) with a link to samples here The songs are all performed by various Windham Hill artists including George Winston.
I’m puzzled by the lack of representation for Bernard Herrmann (particularly his score for Psycho).
2081 had a very good score, but I’d award my favorite to The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
@muppetish I thought of that but I guess I am old and not many younger people really accociated or recognize it as a signature of the movie.
@Joker94 Yes The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly was one of my favorites growing up. It is up there but again many of the younger clan I have met do not know much of the movie.
@Hypocrisy_Central I agree, it’s a classic! Ennio Morricone is just a beastly composer, that movie defined spaghetti western music for me.
Star Wars
Star Trek
Star Trek: Wrath of Khan
Star Trek: Search for Spock
Scent of a Woman
Rats, forgot Superman, at least for the US.
Hand slapping forehead How did I forget Sound of Music for God’s sake . . .
Vangelis – Chariots of Fire
Mike Oldfield – Tubular Bells (theme music to The Exorcist)
My favorite:
Out of Africa
Batman (the first one with Michael Keaton)
Jurassic Park
The Remains of the Day
Howard’s End
Lawrence of Arabia
Exodus
Midnight Cowboy
@Kardamom I believe The Sound of Music, Mary Poppins and Winnie the Pooh are not intrumentals, they have vocals involved. :-)
@Hypocrisy_Central You are so right! I got caught up with the wonderful theme songs that I couldn’t help myself.
I hope you liked them anyway.
