Do you use a storage locker?

Asked by filmfann (52456points) April 26th, 2011

My wife has become addicted to watching the television show “Storage Wars”, where professional 2nd hand dealers bid on abandoned storage lockers. Some of the finds are amazing, others are just clutter.
It seems people abandon very expensive items. Have they just lost track of them? Did they forget about the locker?
Do you use a storage locker? Do you keep track of what you have stored? Do you have a back-up plan so that, should you die or go to jail, someone keeps up the rent? How often do you go back to it?
Have you ever bid on an abandoned locker? What did you find?

I recently rented one for a year to store “clutter” while I tried to sell my house. Of course I could not have predicted it would take me over a year to sell my house and at $88.00 a month it cost me a lot to store all that “clutter” that was barely even worth the final total rental cost.

I have been considering using a storage unit but really don’t think it would be worth the cost. What I really need to do is declutter (sell/give away) because you can’t take it with you and others don’t have time to care about what you have.

The only time I would consider using a storage locker is when moving. That would be planned for short term between houses. Otherwise I just clean out my house and only keep what is most important to me.

I have a storage unit for my apartment, but it is one floor up from me, and I haven’t actually used it yet. I figure, if I ever accumulate too much stuff to fit in my two bedroom apartment, then it’s time to go through and get rid of some of my stuff, lol!

Yes, we keep a storage unit across town but nothing in there would be considered treasure, maybe goodies but not hugely valuable. Now that I think about it, we’ve had stuff in storage exactly 1yr which is long enough to decide what to keep, what to sell and to stop paying storage fees.
