Is there a certain time of year when you typically find the best deals on appliances?

We’re in for a new refrigerator, since the cost of repair is equal to half of what we paid for this one in the first place about 13 years ago.
I don’t watch TV, don’t listen to commercial radio, don’t pay attention to newspaper inserts, etc., so I have no idea if there’s a seasonality to appliance sales as there is with some other big items, such as furniture and cars.
Can you advise me when is the best time to shop for large appliances? As long as the old unit doesn’t flat break down on us, I’d like to wait for sale season if we can.
I’ll also gladly entertain any advice on models and brands.
I hate stuff like this.

Buy TV’s during the week before the SuperBowl…
Don’t ever buy things like that during the summer, the prices are jacked up very much. Sadly, the best times to buy these appliances are after holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas (especially Christmas!). I absolutely hate shopping during those times.
I just bought an apartment and I had to furnish the entire thing. I spent way too much money and I’m sure I could have saved during those times.
This time of year I would look at yard sales, especially if you are in a college town. You can get some decent stuff for a good price from graduating students that are relocating for work. It will last you until you can hit the sales in the winter, then you can sell it to a college student wanting to get out of the dorms and into an appartment or house.
I got my new one last year from Sears between Thanksgiving and Christmas, it was a floor model so I got a break on the price, but it still had the warranty.
I am not sure the best tme for appliance sales, but this is how I would go about it.
First I would figure out what I want. My next fridge will have the fridge on the top with double doors and the freezer on the bottom. In the fridge I want as many drawers as possible. I think the most I have seen is 4. I know I want Kitchen Aid or Whirlpool (actually they are the same company) most likely. I would look online hoping to see the selection. I would price them at a couple of stores, and hopefully a salesperson will be willing to call me when they go on sale. This is more likely in a specialty kitchen appliance store, or I would call periodically hoping to catch a sale always talking to the same salesperson.
Part of the reason I would do it this way, is I don’t like to make on the spot decisions. It would be hard for me to go shopping in one day, just because there are sales, and decide what fridge I am going to buy. I’d rather shop now, and decide when a price is acceptable.
Also, sometimes the salesperson knows when the next sale is coming up; you might not get the very best deal of the year, but hopefully a reasonable price. It would be better than waiting too long and the fridge breaking down leaving you in the position to buy on the spot at that point,
The time of year in which I have cash. But I believe that several blogs/websites have looked into the issue for you, and complied lists. I believe LifeHacker did one a while back, and it was quite good (although, I can’t actually verify the accuracy, so the “quite good” part is really meaningless.)
When I’ve bought appliances at BestBuy they have been helpful about telling me when the next sale would be and what kind of savings there would be. Otherwise, I would say January.
