What is the best philosophy you ever heard, so you make it a rule you live by?

What has someone said to you in your past, present that really made you sit up and listen? A rule you now live by and would want to pass on to your kids, grandchildren etc.

Without a doubt the Golden Rule.
If that doesn’t make it for you, how about the Golden Rule of dogs, if you can’t eat it or play with it, then piss on it!!!
To be a great referee you need to act like a great referee. For some reason this philosophy bled over into just about anything I’ve done since basketball refereeing in college. If I pretend to do the things I think a great ____ does, I’m usually satisfied with myself.
This is a bit tongue-in-cheek but somewhat useful:
Don’t sweat the petty stuff and don’t pet the sweaty stuff.
@jlelandg I like your referee paradigm a lot as there is an explicit intention keep the game rolling and resolve conflict in an orderly fashion.
If death is certain, and the time of death uncertain, what is the next right action?

So I try to make the best of everything.

It’s not so much what somebody said to me, but the email signature line of a man whom I have great respect for. It states:
“The secret to life is not about surviving the storm, but rather in learning how to dance in the rain.”
Don’t compromise yourself.
When In Doubt, Don’t.
Has worked for me for 50 plus years.

1. Pay yourself first.
2. Live beneath your means.
Don’t sweat the small stuff
My Mom always says “Don’t trouble Trouble, until Trouble troubles you.” In other words, don’t waste time worrying about what bad thing might happen. It might never happen at all, and if it does, you’ll need the energy you wasted worrying and wondering about it to act to surmount it.
The Golden Rule. I’ve always believed that the world would be perfect if this rule was practiced by every human being.

Speak softly and carry a big stick. It seems to get me pretty far in life :)
@katethegreat yeah having a big dick can get you very far in life, just look at ron Jeremy! Oh wait, you said big stick, yes that’s important too, especially if you need to beat something off (hey that’s just funny). Big assets (?) are important in life.
1. Treat others like how you want to be treated yourself.
2. Only say sorry if you really mean it.
3.Don’t let anything or anyone stop you from acheiving your goals in life.
“Those creatures that survive in the long run survive in the long run; you don’t survive in the long run by destroying the place you live; you survive in the long run by making it better.”
“Nobody is free until we’re all free!”
