Is it really healthier for your hair to not use shampoo at all?
I’ve been reading some articles on how shampoo is not healthy for your hair. How would I go about having clean hair if I did not use shampoo? Do you just go in the shower and use water?
It seems that a lot of people are doing it these days. If you do this, can you please explain it?

I know a lot of people who do this. Some of them only wash their hair once a week, meaning that they don’t even get it wet when they get in the shower. I really think it depends on the person’s hair type. I wash my hair every morning because it gets oily very quickly. If you’re not going to wash your hair with shampoo, I don’t think you need to even get it wet or anything.
Yes, absolutely. I’m too lazy to go into the details at the moment…
beer makes a good shampoo, and it doesn’t have all the additives that most commercial shampoos have.
But it is not always easy to convince the cop at the sobriety check point that you have not been drinking.
Well, I don’t think it’s that bad, but I know some people that only wash their hair every other day because it ruins your hair or is just not good for it. I think that washing it every day can also attract lice, ironically. I realized all this hype and now I only wash my hair every other day (maybe a little more than that). I do wet it every day, though…No lice—-yet—-. I wash my body everyday, sometimes twice. I am not sure that it is as bad, though.
I have very oily hair so I feel the need to at least rinse it every day but I don’t use shampoo everyday. It is said to dry out your natural oils which is not good for your hair. I still use shampoo about every other day just cause I need it to feel clean. I think it depends on how oily your hair is. If you can go more than a day without using shampoo by all means do it. It’s probably better for you anyway.
Diluted baking soda and apple cider vinegar solutions. It’s referred to as the “no-poo” method. Supposedly it balances the ph of your hair, too.
I use apple cider vinegar, like @incendiary_dan mentions, and it works great for me. I find that the baking soda is unnecessary. It’s helpful when you first stop using shampoo or when you first go silicone-free with conditioner because it eliminates the residue that those products leave behind. Once you’re not putting all that stuff in your hair in the first place, however, the baking soda becomes superfluous.
I havent used shampoo in probably 5–6 months now. The first couple weeks your hair will feel really nasty but after that your good. For me personally, my hair has never felt healthier or nearly as soft and silky as it has the past couple months from no shampoo/conditioner. I occasionally use apple cider vinegar if I get my hair particularly dirty but generally I just wash it with just water and scrub my fingers through it a lot to get it clean.
@global_nomad ehh I dont know it may just be me and the few people I know but if you stop washing with shampoo you should still get it wet to clean it. It helps keep it softer. Otherwise you start getting into the process of acquiring natural dreadlocks
I actually have pretty oily hair sometimes, so would my hair get really nasty if I started one of these methods? I don’t want to look gross!
I’ve found that just running extra-hot water (hotter than I usually comfortably shower with) over my hair and scrubbing a bit every day or so keeps it clean for weeks. Depends on how long my hair is and how much smoke/sweat/contaminants I’ve been around. I’ve also heard it’s healthier for your hair in the long run to limit the amount of shampoo you use….
@KatetheGreat I have oily hair too, its just something you have to deal with for a couple weeks then it gets much better.
