Can you suggest me some mellow, emotional music?

Asked by Vunessuh (16727points) April 28th, 2011

I asked this question over a year ago and the collective gave me some incredible suggestions. If you’d like to scroll through what I already have, feel free.

When I write, I get much of my inspiration from music. Yesterday, I heard this song for the first time and it actually gave me the creative guidance I needed to return to a script that I wasn’t comfortable to return to for a while, due to the place it was at or rather the place that it wasn’t at. I was waiting for something to inspire me and guide me and give me the realization I needed to make the changes and the risks I needed to make in order to move forward. Needless to say, I’m on a serious high right now with my writing, something I haven’t felt in a while.

I’m looking for suggestions that strike an emotional chord within you. Something beautiful. Deep. Depressing. Emotional.

Melancholy.

If you need more than the example above, here’s what else I’ve been listening to lately:

This Mortal Coil – Song To The Siren
Stevie Nicks – Crystal
Sarah Mclachlan – Witness
Sade – Haunt Me
Adele – Make You Feel My Love
Christina Aguilera – You Lost Me

Instrumentals are great as well like this one and this one.

Anything dark and depressing is fine, like Muse, for example.

Thanks so much in advance.

When all else fails, go to Youtube and listen to the music of the Jackie Gleason Orchestra.

Yes, the tv star had a great orchestra. Listen for yourself.

@Vunessuh Your question made me think at once of Crystal Silence by Chick Corea. Do you like it?

mazingerz88's avatar

In My Life—- the version by Bette Midler and better yet, believe it or not Sean Connery recited the lyrics in a melancholic recording I found in iTunes. Now I know this is maybe more of a romantic tune at a glance but deep within the song I also feel the bitter sweet, well mostly bitter actually, taste of impending death due to human aging.

Vunessuh's avatar

@marinelife Really beautiful. Thank you.
@Randy I wish I could give you more than one GA. Excellent suggestions. I especially love the first song and the one by Sigur Ros…I’ve heard that somewhere before, but I can’t remember where. It’s a gorgeous song and goes so well with that video! Also, thanks for bringing my attention to the Manchester Orchestra. :)

Some background.

Season 3 finale of The West Wing. Press Secretary CJ Cregg had been getting death threats, so she was assigned a Secret Service agent. They start to develop feelings for each other, but since it’d be against the rules, he doesn’t make a move, until they catch the guy sending the threats. He tells her, they kiss, and then he goes to buy her flowers.

Meanwhile, the President has to decide if he should order the assassination of a foreign official, while Deputy White House Chief of Staff Josh Lyman and his girlfriend argue over a piece of legislation.

See here.

You can see the full music video here, but you should see the other one first, ‘cause The West Wing is hella good.

Philip Glass is kinda depressing.

This is out of the norm for me, but I’m being lazy and not reading every post at the moment. sorry

I’ve suggested This Mortal Coil in the past and noticed it in your details. This is always my go to music when I’m in a mellow mood. Eddie Vedder Into The Wild soundtrack is another one, and has no one mentioned Morrissey? Good god that man makes me want to commit suicide.~

@Kardamom Excellent suggestions. I really like the Oasis song. Somewhere Over The Rainbow is such an amazing song. I discovered that from 50 First Dates. And ohhh Norah. She’s great. December is my favorite song of hers. :)
@bob_ That video matched with that song makes it ever more emotional. Thanks for sharing. :)
@dverhey perfect, thank you.
@jonsblond I’ll check out that soundtrack. Thanks!

@jonsblond THE INTO THE WILD SOUNDTRACK!!!! YES!!!!!! i was not and Eddie Vedder fan until I heard that. I love it!

DeanV's avatar

You might want to try Interpol, White Lies and Joy Division.

They all have dark, baritone singers and somewhat depressing lyrics.

jonsblond's avatar

@Randy I’ve never seen the movie but I listen to the music all the time. I finally rented the movie yesterday and when I got home I noticed it was Into The Blue that I accidentally grabbed. Mother fucker put the wrong movie in the wrong spot. I was so upset! I’m stuck with a surfing movie this weekend, and a lame one at that. :/

Randy's avatar

@jonsblond Please get it and watch it soon!
