How do some people RT (twitter) with more than 160 characters?

Asked by MyNewtBoobs (19069points) April 28th, 2011

Sometimes I see people retweet someone whose original tweet was 139 characters, so when they add the @YourLongTwitterUsername it’s then, like 162 characters. But it still shows up (in Brizzly…) in full, although Brizzly won’t let me RT like that. What’s up with that, and how do I RT when the original is long?

When you click “Retweet” button it should RT the person’s exact tweet if it is 140 characters or less. The @ and the username do not contribute to the character count when you use the special RT feature. It will count however if you are manually retweeting, say from a cellphone or something.

I know TweetDeck lets you post more than 140 characters on both the desktop app and the mobile app (I have Android, not sure about iPhone). It posts part of your original tweet then includes a deck.ly link to the whole tweet. I think other desktop and mobile apps let you post more than 140 characters as well, but I haven’t used them.

@Allie See, TweetDeck would be awesome, but the font is really teeny tiny for my resolution – and I like things enlarged anyway, so it’s a giant deal-breaker for me.
