Do you make homemade popsicles?

Asked by MyNewtBoobs (19069points) April 30th, 2011

What do you make them with – orange juice? Chocolate milk? Boones Farm? Do you have a kit, or do you use ice cube trays and popsicle sticks?

I recently made root beer popsicles for the little one with a kit I bought from Walmart or Dollar General, can’t remember where it was from. It only cost $2 at the most. We use Koolaid and Hawaiian Punch also.

Strawberry Boones Farm is a favorite of mine. I should try it for myself. Maybe add some Pop Rocks. Who says Pop Rocks are just for kids. Can you freeze Pop Rocks? :D

@jonsblond Oooo. Yes, add Pop Rocks. Except: Will they dissolve before they can freeze? That would be sad. My friend made Boones Farm popsicles the other day; they were really good except for that they were grapefruit flavor and I think grapefruit tastes like piss. In fact, we spent 20 minutes discussing how you shouldn’t eat grapefruit because it tastes like piss, and you know what else tastes like piss? Piss. Ergo, grapefruit = piss.

@MyNewtBoobs I put strawberry Pop Rocks in my mouth then took a swig of Strawberry Boones not too long ago. I felt like I was 5 years old for a minute. Not saying a 5 year old drinks Boones, but I hope you know what I mean. Fun times. lol

@jonsblond They do when their parents are alcoholics in need of drinking buddies!

I make mine (when I have space in the freezer…) with a concentrated cordial we get here in all sorts of flavours. The trick is that you mix it up at about twice the strength you would to drink, so that they’re very sweet and flavourful. You can use all sorts of things, though. Roses Lime is great and you can use it in your vodka tonic to keep it cold and add flavour. For the kids, I use what ever cordial we have on hand. I recently found some great flavours when I was shopping in Sweden. Pomegranate/Cranberry, Blueberry/Apple, Orange/Peach. I just have those 6-at-a-time plastic tray things that you fill up and set the stick-cover thingie on the top and then turn them out when they’re frozen.

While not exactly a popsicle, this frozen adult treat is a summer staple:

Bourbon Slushies
1 (64-oz.) container pineapple juice
1 (12-oz.) can frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed
1 (12-oz.) can frozen limeade concentrate, thawed
1½ cups bourbon
¼ cup maraschino cherry juice
Garnish with maraschino cherries

Stir together first 4 ingredients and 1 cup water. Place in a plastic container and freeze for at least 8 hours. To serve, scoop out slush into a glass, top with maraschino cherry, serve with a spoon. The alcohol in the bourbon stops the mixture from completely freezing.

I like blending up fresh strawberries and raspberries with white grape juice and freezing them in those Dollar Store Popsicle molds! YUM!

A friend of mine spins watermelon in her blender then pours it into the popsicle molds @Cruiser just mentioned. Sounds great, C. But the freezer is packed.

I have made them. When I did, I always and only made them from cranberry juice. Fantastic, wonderful things.

That reminded me of being a little kid and my grandma letting me and my brother make Seven-Up popsicles in those little dixie cups. Thank you for that memory.

Those plastic tupperware or rubbermaid popsicle forms are pretty nice. I like to take frozen strawberries, which I have thawed out just a little, puree them in the blender and pour them into the forms. Yum!

@Cruiser I just got my first dollar store popsicle maker. Oh, dollar store, you are so evil, having so many things I want. I’m trying some out right now. I think my next one will involve pureed mango and pineapple. Mmmmm.
