How likely is it that there will be retaliation from Al Qaeda?

Asked by KateTheGreat (13640points) May 1st, 2011

Giving that Bin Laden is now dead, what are the chances that there will be retaliation?

Does anyone have any theories?

They’ve come close to achieving their objectives: we’re exhausted, with our economy in tatters and deeply in hock to the Chinese and the Gulf States. We’ll be gone from these lands soon enough. If they were really wise, they should be switching their concerns to China.

I’d imagine it’s pretty likely. I don’t have any actual theories, but I won’t be surprised to hear about increased attacks overseas.

You cut off one head and three grow back. This will do nothing to curb terrorism. It will probably make it worse. But it feels really fucking good that the bastard is dead.

Actual likelihood: Not sure. Likelihood in terms of heightened security: Really high (like we need a reason to make airports even crappier).

It’s significant that they’ve lost they’re figurehead and, by US taking the body, they’ve been denied the ability to give him a martyr’s funeral.
Those are the things to celebrate today. They’re fucking terrorists. Who the hell can predict what they’ll do next?

@johnpowell I completely agree. I remember how great it felt when Saddam Hussein was killed. Now that Bin Laden is dead, it feels like there is a big weight off of our shoulders.

I feel very worried that there will be an attack on the United States.

They lost one of their leaders, and everyone’s celebrating because of it.

I would be angry too.

Then again, they are “Muslim” (I put this in quotes, because anyone knows that Islam is not modeled in any of their behavior) they believe it is being a martyr for the cause. Then they might be celebrating the death of their leader?

There are so many things to actually take into view.

Al-kaida have been knocked back on their heels for so long they may only be a mere shell of what it was back in their heyday. Since we’ve been allowed into Pakistan to do this we may go for a clean sweep there. The US has developed many tentacles of intelligence since the war began.

He doesn’t get his 72 Virgins for being shot in the head in a surprise CIA action, does he?

Stay tuned for the next tape from them. I can hardly wait… giggity.

Remember when OBL “dropped a tape” back in 2008 before the Presidential election? He offered no threat to the American people, but asked us to convert to Islam. He also posed one question: why were we still in Iraq and Afghanistan if we didn’t want to be there any more?

At this point, getting us riled up again would be counter-productive as we are starting to scale down our presence (esp. in terms of “boots”) in the Islamic World, which is what they really want (other than us suddenly embracing Allah and Mohammed).

With all the cheering from the masses will others elsewhere in the world use this occasion to say we are bloodthirsty killers cheering the death of one individual. It’s going to happen. But who cares?
We’re at war retaliation comes with the territory. They’re pissed at us for fighting back? What did they honestly think was going to eventually happen? There will be those who will say we’ve screwed the pooch by doing this because now the bad guys are going to be upset with us. Doing less than killing him is the same as capitulation IMHO.

Are you kidding it’s already being planned.

I expect smaller retaliation attempts within the next months and a really big one in a couple of years. The most diabolical Islamist masterminds are very, very patient. They will think of something the world has never seen. We can prevent this using massive infiltration of agents from dozens of the best intelligence services worldwide.
