I'd like to give something more personal than a gift certificate. She's a thoughtful, fun, cultured girl who lives in New York City.

yoga/dance/pottery classes? everything se hinton ever wrote?
tickets to a broadway show maybe.
jewelry is always a safe bet--a nice pair of earrings or a necklace. or an ipod nano/shuffle if she doesn't already have it...
A signature piece of classic jewelry, like pearl earrings or an engraved locket or bracelet is a sure bet. If she lives in NYC, I'd also consider giving her an annual membership/pass to any one of the museums.
A subscription to The Funny Times,

I think an inspirational book (easy to read) on making sound choices for her career and life would be a good choice. An iPod and jewerly is all well and good but has no long term substance.

For my daughters 8th grade graduation gift, i gave her a bike. I know what your thinking, it dosen’t really seem that GREAT, but my daughter is sportsy, loved hanging with friends, and like biking with her friends. After she got it she loved it and used it a lot. And it still fits her to this day! Some other ideas would be a nice camera, or a vacation with one of her best friends( of course she’ll have to pay for a little of the trip. Lastly maybe a day with her good friends to a spa or just to get her nails done.
