Read any really scary novel lately?

Asked by mazingerz88 (29261points) May 4th, 2011

I’ve been hungering lately for a scary novel that will scare the bejeesus out of me. Whether it’s about zombies, vampires, monsters or ghosts I’m ok as long as it’s very well written. Thanks!

Misery and The Shining, both by Stephen King.
They’re the only ones I’ve read, both terrifying – much worse than the movie adaptations. I never thought a book could be scarier than a movie, especially ones as tense as Misery/The Shining, but the books had me sat on the edge of my seat, biting my nails and shrieking like a freak at the scary parts.

I’ve heard that any Stephen King book is a good read, though. I’d love to read more. But for the moment I’d definitely recommend those two.

Silence of the Lambs, and even more so, the sequel Hannibal, by Thomas Harris.

If you really want to rock your world, read a true crime book. Ann Rule writes some incredible books on murderers and serial killers. She goes into great detail about the backgrounds of the characters. When it is based on facts, it is much more chilling than fiction.

I am Legend by Richard Matheson is quite scary and worth a try.
Ghost Stories of an Antiquary by M R James is simply superb.

I don’t know why but Stephen King’s “Boogeyman” in the collection of short stories Nightshift gave me the heebie jeebies.

@lookingglassx3 Thanks. I’ve read The Shining many years ago and did not terrify me as much as The Amityville Horror did which I read outside the house at daytime. But I might soon get Misery because even though I saw the movie, just like you said the book is scarier.

@Pied Pfeffer Thanks, Hannibal I’m definitely interested now.

@flutherother excited to check out Ghost Stories of an Antiquary

@King Pariah thanks will check it out. I think I did read a King collection of novellas before aside from this Full Dark I just finished ( that farmer husband killing his wife scene’s writing is something else ) years ago and there was that story of a woman who still gave birth after losing a very important part of her anatomy. Unforgettable.

I like the older Stephen King novels myself…the more recent ones just don’t seem as good, or as scary.

@flutherother Oh my how strange, I just downloaded Ghost Stories of an Antiquary from iBook and for the first time I got a cover which is ghostly blurred and it’s not suppose to. Yikes!

The Surgeon, The Apprentice, and Sinner…all by Tess Gerritsen.

It’s a story about a detective named Jane Rizzoli and there is a wickedly brutal killer on the loose that likes to cut the reproductive parts out of women. It’s fantastic and a very thrilling read.

@mazingerz88 Yikes indeed, the first story is about a haunted book.
