I'll be there for almost a week on my own. I'd love recommendations for museums, restaurants, cafes, bars, strange and beautiful alleys, anything...

forget restaurants-- make sure to eat the corn on the cob with chile and lime that street vendors sell everywhere...mmmm...
There are amazing murals in the Statehouse (not sure what the building is called). You can get in for free, but it's really worth while to pay for a guide who will walk you through the murals that tell the whole history of the conquest of Mexico.
Go to Coyoacan, Frida Kahlo's old neighborhood--see her house and, on the weekend, a big beautiful outdoor market with crafts and clothes and snacks and things, and an indoor food market every day of the week.
The National Museum of Anthropology is huge and fascinating, and even better if you speak Spanish. It's in the bosque de chapultepec (huge park), which you could spend days in.
A cheap, beautiful, comfortable hostel is Hostel Home--look it up on hostels.com
