Anyone familiar with Video Conferencing over IP?

Asked by ccatron (2073points) April 23rd, 2008

I’ve used Polycom and Tanberg equipment between interconnected sites. One of the organizations at my company wants to do training from their home office to different places that may or may not be connected back to one of our sites.

Do they have to use a hosting service for video conferencing kindof like voice conferencing with AT&T?

I use Skype for video conferencing and find it to works flawlessly, plus the program is free. All you need is a webcam, microphone, speakers, and a connection to the internet. I have used Polycom hardware in the past, but am very dissapointed in the quality of their products.
I am guessing you are using Windows, but what kind of hardware do you have available?

Yes, we are using Windows, but I need something that will capture an entire conference room. The nice thing about the Polycom units I have used is that they come with a remote to move the camera around on either side, a nice microphone, and the video quality is pretty good as long as you have a T1 or something like that.

There is a good chance that the polycom webcams will work with Skype. But you have many coices in hardware, most of which will work with webconferencing software. Here is a Logitech camera offers mechanical tracking, and is also compatable with Skype’s high quality video service. Sorry to keep pushing Skype, but its the only video conferencing software I have used that works really well.
And yes, you will want a high bandwidth connection at both ends of the conference to stream properly.

So, I notice some headphones and microphones and sets that say they are compatible with Skype or other communications software… and it has me wondering what they can possibly mean, since I’d expect such I/O devices to be one level removed from software – what real issue or consideration could be involved there?
