What do you eat for breakfast when you hate breakfast?

Asked by klutzaroo (4716points) May 4th, 2011

I haven’t eaten breakfast regularly in years and years. Sometimes eating in the morning goes as far as making my tummy upset. However, I need to eat breakfast as a part of my plan to manage my weight. What can I eat that I won’t get tired of? I’m heading out the door a lot of times and will eat in my car on the way to work about half my mornings.

a low calorie protien shake. I mix it with a bottle of zero vitamin water and go.

I’m not suggesting it to you, but it is the first thing that came to mind… The barrel of your gun.
How could you hate breakfast? If there is a nice local bakery maybe go there and get something new each day. Fresh croissants, hell yes. Or bagels or muffins or scones, or danishes. Some coffee or fresh squeezed juice, mmmmm.

@everephebe If eating in the morning makes you pukey? Not preggers. It happens. Can’t handle coffee unless it has a lot of crap in it to kill the acid.

Egg + tortilla + salsa. Whoa.

Non fat yogurt, Activia brand is particularly tasty and is supposed to be helpful for your tummy troubles

Kashi makes really good bars, that are far more healthy than a lot of the others

Target’s own brand of nutrition drink (the equivalent of Ensure) is very tasty and has everything you need.

I also sometimes make a batch of bran muffins with dried fruit, then I freeze them and pull one out the night before to let it thaw.

You also might like some healthy oatmeal cookies with dried cranberries and walnuts and dark chocolate pieces (all healthy items).

Morningstar Farms makes really delicous fake sausage patties. You can nuke them pretty quickly and throw them onto a whole wheat English muffin.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwich on whole wheat.

Have you talked with your doctor about this?

This does not quite answer your question, but do you eat dinner or snacks very late? If you do, if you stop that you might wake up hungry.

Honestly I don’t think you need to eat first thing, if it is hard on your tummy. Have something healthy as a 15 minute break late morning.

I am with @Judi on this one. I am often in a rush to leave and I often have a protein shake before I go to work. If you are not used to eating breakfast, it can be a good way to get your metabolism going without eating anything too heavy.

You can buy breakfast bars too but I think they may be full of sugar. You would have to read the food labels to see how healthy they are.

If I have time though I like to have some scrambled eggs with tomato or something. Or some toast and vegemite.

well you could try a vegetable or fruit smoothie + whole grain rolls with peanut butter or low fat cheese! =P

First, you don’t have to eat the same thing everyday. It does help you diet if you have something in the morning. . . a piece of fruit, a cup of yogurt, a piece of toast with a touch of jam, a whole grain cracker or two. Check the calories and be sure it stays within your requirements. Good luck with the diet.

Sometimes I just whip up a quickie protein shake, with 1% milk anf GNC whey powder, Banana or Chocolate.

Also on the menu, a piece of raisen toast and peanut butter, a yogurt and a banana, and a quick bowl of instant oatmeal with flax meal powder & fruit.

I am not a breakfast type myself, but, you will feel much better if you have something to get you going after the coffee moment.

I usually don’t feel like eating something for breakfast, but I always do. I either have eggs, ramen noodles, or sardine toast. Yummy.

I stay away from breakfasty foods, save for bagels (because, we should always have bagels). I have a couple bits of leftovers, maybe a slice of toast with a slice of cheese, whatever snacking foods I have around (more like from the olive bar than the Doritos bag, though).

I’d say fruits and a glass of milk. Or maybe you can put them together and make a nice shake. i usually do this when i don’t feel like having breakfast.

Try raw porridge oats with milk. Cheap and easy and healthy. You will never get tired of it as you won’t like it to begin with.

Keep a bunch of bananas on the counter and a loaf of wheat bread divided into ziploc bags in the freezer, a jar of peanut butter mixed with jelly in the cupboard, 6 activias in the fridge, a bag of costco fruit and nut mix packages in the cupboard, and anything you think would work for you…maybe even a bunch of grapes divided into portions.

What you want to avoid is the “nothing quick available to eat” situation that leaves you walking out the door to Dunkin’ Donuts as a solution.

If you put 6 eggs in a pan of cold water in the evening, turn on the stove and bring to a boil, turn off the stove and wait 15 minutes, pour off the water and put in the fridge that is “eggcellent” protein and they last a few days refrigerated. If you are just getting started, try a glass of milk for a week, then take your vitamins with a glass of milk for a week, then add a piece of toast for a week and build up. Bring the other stuff with you to eat later and gradually shift it to the morning. You want to get away from the rushing aspect of eating breakfast as you get older. Running out of the house with wet hair shouldn’t be part of your life into your fifties! It is expensive and not good for your metabolism and peace of mind.

You will adjust, just hang in there.

Pizza.

I honestly eat so much pizza lately, that I eat it for breakfast and dinner.

They are trying to manage their weight. Pizza? Muffins? Peanut butter? All low volume high calorie foods. For me that stuff would pack it on. Stick to fruits and vegies and lean protien. Use whole grains in moderation, and a little tiny bit of healthy fat (avocado or olive oil) to keep your gal bladder happy.

When I get to work I have some cubes of extra sharp cheddar cheese and follow that with a nice Granny Smith apple. I eat it all at my desk while I’m booting up the computer and reading my email. I look forward to getting to work for just that reason.

Thanks for the ideas guys!

@everephebe Not really. Breakfast aversion started when I was like 7 or 8 after I had a virus that kicked my ass. After that, I’ve pretty much always been at least indifferent. My mom talked to the doctor about it and got the ‘if she’s hungry, she’ll eat” talk. I have had periods where I ate pretty regularly, but not often and they don’t last long. Its just one of those weird quirks.

What are some quick and easy things you like to eat that fit into your diet? It doesn’t have to be breakfast food and you probably don’t need to eat first thing. It would probably be fine to put together a packed breakfast and take it out the door with you to eat later in the morning when you feel like eating.

My husband and one of our sons can’t stand to eat breakfast right away in the morning. Both of them have to be up and about for a couple of hours before eating. They also only like breakfast foods that require some amount of prep and cooking by me, of course which just isn’t going to happen on most weekdays. My husband is on his own, but I can’t let the kid go to school without eating something. I let him eat whatever he wants (within reason) even if it isn’t breakfast food. This morning he had a ham, turkey, and cheese sandwich. Sometimes he has leftovers from dinner, like pasta and sausage with red sauce. I’m pretty sure he’s the only second grader to sometimes have veal for breakfast Dad’s restaurant leftovers or tuna salad on crackers. Anyway, who decided breakfast had to be eggs, cereal, toast, or oatmeal?

I was diagnosed hypoglycemic 16 years ago and am now pre-diabetic. I used to eat the typical breakfast cereals, milk, egg, bread, muesli etc. But it was actually bad for me. I’ve since become allergic to wheat, egg, milk, citrus and a few other things. These days I usually wait a couple of hours to eat my first meal. But sometimes I’ll eat anything else not classed as breakfast. For example Chicken, soup, nuts, apple with peanut butter or whatever. But never cereals.

I was in Turkey last month and they actually eat cuts of tomato, cucumber, cheese, processed meat, french baguette and maybe a boil egg for breakfast. In China they have congee which is a thick rice soup. In South Africa they have a porridge made from corn.

Eat or drink what you can in the morning. Not everyone can tolerate eating at that time. But eat as soon as your able.

Banana
Yogurt (frozen if I get bored of creamy)
Handful of nuts (Pecans, Almonds, Brazils)
Scrambled eggs with cheese and whatever vegies are in the frig, sometimes in a corn or flour tortilla
Leftovers are my favorite breakfast- piece of chicken, chunk of casserole, slice of pizza, etc.

Oops. I didn’t see the “trying to manage my weight” part. Sorry. Don’t eat pizza. You’ll just gain weight!
