Is this an indication I might have a computer virus?

Asked by filmfann (52487points) May 5th, 2011

At the top right corner of my screen are the three buttons for minimizing, maximizing, and closing the applications on my computer.
The buttons are there, but there is no X, _, or Square.
I have run a virus scan which is not yet complete, but has not indicated a problem yet.
I have also restarted my computer a couple times.
Any suggestions?
Is this a virus?

Try pressing alt and space bar at the same time and choose maximize from the dropdown menu.
Oh, I mean if you’re using Windows.

it is already maximized, so that option isn’t available.

I would wait for the results of your computer scan before making any adjustments to your pc,

If you have the Trojan, you will know it.

Slow computer and funny looking bars that appear to be fake.

When I have a virus, a small clock appears at the left bottom of the page.

I run a virus check and it destroys it.

My antivirus program (bit defender) came back clean.
I ran a system restore, and set the computer back 2 weeks, and still have the same problem.
It isn’t really doing anything, other than not having those symbols in the buttons in the corner.

What OS are you using and is the issue with every window or only some programs ie. browser? What browser do you use?

Some themes (like those that emulate OS X) don’t do things that way, so I would have to know whether or not you modified the theme or installed one that uses different graphics, ones without the X or square.

Have you tried Google ? A search reveals many potential solutions.

This happened with many, but not all programs. My virus detection was not effected, but also showed no problems.
Google results didn’t help.
My computer crashed hard Friday morning. I am still trying to help it recover.
I am not sure if this was from a misloaded update, or a virus, or a security attack.
