Why do my bundt cakes end up looking like a baboon's butt?

Asked by KateTheGreat (13640points) May 7th, 2011

Every single time I bake a cake in a bundt pan, it ends up looking an awful hemorrhoidal baboon’s ass. It never comes out even! Why does it do this? Is it normal? I even my cake out perfectly before I put it in the oven, but it comes out all weird looking. I normally have to cut off a significant amount of the cake just to make it look even.

Help?

My guess would be the oven you’re using. Maybe it doesn’t heat evenly.

Oven does not heat evenly.

Omg, do I need pics. Right now.

You have effectively eliminated my craving for cake tonight. Thank you.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@MyNewtBoobs I have one in the oven right now, I’ll take a pic when it’s out.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@JilltheTooth You’re quite welcome. ;)

Are you making it from scratch or using a mix? Are you substituting any ingredients?

KateTheGreat's avatar

@BarnacleBill I make it from scratch.

I want to know how you know what a hemorrhoidal baboon’s ass looks like. And no, I don’t want cake tonight either.

You could be overbeating. Make the barcardi rum cake and see if it comes out looking like a baboon’s butt. If it does, it’s your oven.

Maybe try turning it a quarter turn every 20 minutes? Not sure if it will help though, just guessing, because I assume your oven does not heat evenly as others have suggested. Is it gas or electric?

JLeslie's avatar

Wait, is it lopsided, or just not flat? Maybe reduce the baking powder a little, or don’t beat as much. Do you have a lot of air pockets inside?

KateTheGreat's avatar

@JLeslie It’s just not flat. Not lopsided. It just looks swollen and weird in the middle section.

@KatetheGreat That’s what she said.

@MyNewtBoobs I love you. You make me giggle so darn much! :)

Best question ever.

KateTheGreat's avatar

Just finished the cake and for once it actually turned out normal! I am sooo happy!

syz's avatar

Oh, great, tease us with promises of baboon butt -cake photos, and then back out! Now I’ll never know what that could possibly look like.

I have no idea kate, but what I do know is that this has to be the greatest question title ever!

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@KatetheGreat I love you too. And it is a great question title!

Okay, okay. I will cook another one this week and post it on here. But tonight, I’m going to create a beautiful cake. I WILL post pics of that. The cake still has this weird unevenness to it, but it’s pretty acceptable this time.

@queenie Thanks love!

@MyNewtBoobs Thanks! :)

@KatetheGreat I don’t think it is your oven then. Have you tried making the edges slightly higher before you put it in the oven? Also, is your pan dark? Dark teflon coated maybe? Dark pans aren’t good for baking, because it gets too hot. The edges might be cooking too fast, and the middle cooks more slowly and puffs up. Another thought, are you using extra large or jumbo eggs? More egg makes the cake fluffier, and recipes typically are written assuming medium or large eggs. Originally I had said maybe a little less baking powder, but it might be the eggs.

KateTheGreat's avatar

@JLeslie That might be my problem. I use jumbo eggs.

How would one ice a baboon butt cake? I am guessing red icing.

everephebe's avatar

-Is your batter lumpy? Is this some vegan recipe?
-What leavening agent do you use? Eggs are a leavening agent too.
-It could be your bundt pan is not heating evenly or have bumps in it. Also it could be your oven…
-What did you do differently this last time you baked it?

Also, if all else fails, frosting will help the appearance. Butt I wouldn’t go with red or pink. ; )

JLeslie's avatar

@KatetheGreat Definitely too much egg. I recommend using large or just taking out a little of the egg if using jumbo. 4 large eggs equals about 3 jumbo. How many eggs is in your recipe?

KateTheGreat's avatar

@everephebe I have actually moved since the last time I baked it. The oven is different. But no, absolutely no vegan recipe.

@JLeslie There are 4 eggs in my recipe.

Try three jumbo. Did it always work out before you moved? Have you moved to a different altitude? Is it a gas oven?
