(NSFW) What lubricants should we use?

Asked by choreplay (6297points) May 8th, 2011

What are some options for lubricant to use for intercourse (male-female)? Don’t really like KY Jelly, what are some other options to use that aren’t unhealthy for my wife’s internal plumbing?

Water-based lubricants (like KY Jelly) are preferred over oil-based lubricants (like Petroleum Jelly). Oil based lubricants lock bacteria in between the lubricant and the skin, which can lead to infections.

Normally, a woman’s own lubricants should be sufficient. But you are wetting her up with your mouth down there first, aren’t you?

I like Astroglide, found in a purple package at most places that sell toothpaste. It leaves a little residue on your hands, but I just wipe them off on the guy’s back and he doesn’t seem to mind :)

I do find that condoms absorb lube (this one, at least) and sometimes we have to stop and reapply, but if you’re not using them it’s great.

P.S. The bottle leaks a little. Keep it in a ziploc bag when not in use, or your socks will get all lubey.

Right. Saliva is a water-based lubricant :-p

KY is excellent. Or vegetable oil!

Don’t waste your money ($13) on that KY ‘His and Hers’ ‘Yours and Mine’ ‘Blue and Purple’ ‘Peanut butter and jelly’ nonsense. It just makes a mess. The containers leak and the lube is sticky.
Besides, your tongue is a whole lot better.

@pshizzle I am pretty sure that vegetable oil should not go anywhere near the genitals.

What about a little olive oil, its natural

choreplay's avatar

What about Vicks Menthal Vapor Rub?

KateTheGreat's avatar

@Season_of_Fall No, that will burn like shit.

choreplay's avatar

@KatetheGreat just a dab, like one part to ten parts of something else.

They actually recommend to massage olive oil to reduce tearing of the perineum during birth so I don’t think it will be harmful during sex

choreplay's avatar

Is a small amount of Vicks bad? The effect was fabulous, now just need to know if it is not healthy?

choreplay's avatar

I need to buy some Proctor and Gamble stock before I let this trick out. That is unless someone can come up with a reason why its not healthy.

It depends a little on your wife’s chemistry and a little on the type of birth control you’re using. A water based lube is good if you are using condoms as a means of contraception. However, they have a tendency to dry out and many have glycerin in them which can cause irritation for some sensitive women. If you do choose a water based lube, you might want to find a glycerin-free version.

Silicone lube have become quite popular and work quite well.—-Its my preference anyway—They tend to last longer than other lubes, since they are not absorbed by the skin, and the possibility of an unpleasant reaction is minimal. However, not all of them are safe for latex, so it might not be a option if you use latex condoms. Also, clean-up can be a bit messier because they don’t absorb into skin.

Oil based lube is OK if you are on a hormonal method of birth control or not using anything and if there has been issues with water based or silicone based lube. It can increase breakage of condoms though, so I wouldn’t recommend using them with condoms. Again, clean up might be an issue since oil based lube would leave oil spots also on your sheets

I prefer silicone based (Doc Johnson has a good one) and have not had any problems with using it.

@Season_of_Fall for a safer version (you didn’t really use vapor rub did you?) a similar idea would be “tingle” (or there is a selection box with samples of all of the different types which is cool) you can see them here not overly expensive either.

choreplay's avatar

@bunnygrl, aaaaa aaaaa, what if I did use a little vicks, and she liked it. What are the issues?

bunnygrl's avatar

not sure honey but there are places that stuff is meant to go and places it isn’t I would think lol. Honestly, no idea, but the tingle one from durex…. well tingles :-) so I’m assuming that its menthol kinda? does anyone know for sure, guys? well the little “temptations” sampler box has 10 sachets, 2 x tingle, 2 x warming 2 x soothing (with aloe vera which is lovely) and 4 assorted flavoured ones which are 2 x pina colada and 2 x cherry. You can see them here they seem to be cheaper at a chemist/drugstore than online for some reason? Re the vicks and consequences, no idea if true (like lots of stuff on the internet) but according to a reply on yahoo it can cause a bad yeast infection for your girlfriend, because of being difficult to wash completely out. You can see the thread here
hugs xx

Well, not trying to get too specific here but I will say it was placed to only hit my wifes clitoris and it was in an amount not to be too hot. Only thing I’m getting from this thread so far is a possible yeast infection. Will talk over with my wife. Thanks all.

Sliquid is usually thought of as really high-grade stuff, it aims to mimic a woman’s own lubricant, and not be smelly or tasty (unless you want it to). They have several different formulas, the water one, the organic/green one, the silicone one, the strawberry tasting one, etc.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

System Jo in the pump bottle. It’s not sweet, not sticky, doesn’t evaporate into nothing and comes in several varieties.

Raven_Rising's avatar

@MyNewtBoobs Sliquid is indeed good stuff and if memory serves, glycerin free Even the flavored ones, which is a hard find!

Vagisil feminine moisturizer is good. It has glycerin but it’s very gentle. It also has chamomile and aloe in it. It’s very light and liquid and fragrance free. I just hate anything greasy! Never liked KY and thankfully there are few times I needed it.

My vote is for Astroglide… it works well for us. Plus, I used to get frequent bouts of vaginitis but since we started using it(20+ years ago) I hardly ever do.

jca's avatar

Astroglide for me. It’s very slippery and cold which is an added bonus. A little goes a long way.

MissAusten's avatar

My obgyn once told me Astroglide saved his marriage. Never tried it myself, but I thought that was a pretty strong recommendation.

My doctor recommended Johnsons Baby Oil and I find it very good.
