What? 1956 ad: Pepsi Cola is the choice drink of mental patients when forced fluids are indicated.

Asked by john65pennington (29273points) May 9th, 2011

1956 issue of Mental Health Magazine states, “Pepsi Cola is the patients drink of choice, when forced fluids are indicated”. The ad shows patients in a ward, drinking supposedly Pepsi from a glass and a glass straw. Since when, did mental hospitals allow glass anything to be handled by a mental patient? Question: how did Pepsi Cola become the patients choice? Did they take a survey?

Love those old ads. I’d walk a mile for a camel. Most doctors recommend Kent cigarrettes.

How is that forcing fluids?

I like Coke~Cola better. Is that a good sign of my mental health?

Wundayatta, good question. I thought forced fluids would be a bag of IV saline, not IV Pepsi.

Who knows what they were thinking in 1956.

This came from an article on Yahoo News this morning. I was amazed to see a glass and a glass straw sitting on a table in a mental hospital.

Pele, yes, its a sign of good health that you like Coke better than Pepsi. U R okay.

No wonder they are in a mental institution, they like Pepsi

If I recall correctly (I was in sort of a haze at the time) the Pepsi was administered as an enema.

Sometimes they put tobasco sauce in that enema, too. They were a cruel bunch in those days.
