Do tv hosts come up with these tidbits of information to gain viewers?

Case in point: Dr Oz’s latest is, “Groundbreaking research shows that for every hour a day you spend sitting, your risk of death increases by 11%.” How can we know this? What kinds of studies could be done to prove it’s right? Think of all the jellies on here and the millions of people at desk jobs and none of them knowing they’re putting their lives at risk. It makes me feel like I should stand up when I’m on my computer.

TV isn’t the most reliable of sources, for many shows are more concerned with viewers and ratings than factual reports.
Test it by sitting down for 10 hours, and see if you are 110% dead after.
It is just a factoid living in the void. Fear not.
I have gotten up to 108% dead, but could never go all the way (didn’t sit long enough, AGAIN!)
I’m already dead, but thanks to the advance guard of the Zombie Apocalypse I have been reborn (well, sort-of) and can keep Fluthering. I just hate it that bits of my person keep falling off. It’s so messy.
News stations do this all of the time. When they’re calling for a little bit of snow, they blow it all out of proportion in the opening clip of the show so that you’ll hang around and watch the whole newscast. Then, when they finally come on, it turns out that they’re calling for flurries.
I happen to really hate this, because I love snow!
It was a 2009 study published the journal of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise. People are discussing it everywhere in the real world. I guess you missed it while you were sitting on your a@@ watching television. Seriously though, we were just having a discussion in the pool tonight about how this generation of teens and 20-somethings sit around too much and don’t eat healthy. Is it true? I mean we were talking about our eating habits and how so many people eat pure junk and preservatives with little or no exercise.
Did you know that 37% of all statistics are made up?
That’s got to be the most useless statistic ever. Right this second, I’m 0% dead but my risk of death is 100% same as everybody else’s except perhaps Symbeline.
