What are the benefits of an iPhone?

I notice many questions/answers are sent via iPhone, are they less expensive to email etc than the desktop computer? Do they run on a pre-paid plan as my old phone does or a great yearly contract? would appreciate some feedback as purchasing an iPhone might be the way to go?

“less expensive to email”. Huh?
I always thought email was free regarless of how sent.

My iPhone is on a prepaid plan. Seriously, it has changed my life. I am constantly online, and have so many tools readily available. You should, as always, shop around for a deal that suits you, and it’s definitely not a substitute for a full-size computer, especially if you intend to be writing a lot.

The main benefit of any smartphone (iPhone, Android, Blackberry…) is that you have a computer with you at all times. That means you have internet access (signal permitting), games, music, movies, and more right in your pocket. I use mine for all those things plus some light spreadsheet work, viewing PDF files, taking pictures, and as a GPS.
As for benefits of the iPhone in particular, I personally see none as I feel Android phones are superior, but that is my opinion and I do not want this thread to devolve into yet another Apple-vs-Android flame war. Both sides agree that smartphones rock though.
My Droid X runs on a normal two year contract with an unlimited data plan. AT&T has a spotty network and data caps while Verizon gives me reception in places where AT&T phones lose their signal and all the data I can eat, so how useful a smartphone really is depends on which network it’s on.
BTW, I am posting this from my phone about 25 miles away from my computer.
I am thinking the only benefit could be the apps. Apple already has a great amount of apps on the App Store. But yeah, Android apps are also great and increasing in number day by day. It ultimately boils down to a matter of choice and preference. I have used an iPhone and it has been a great experience. Now I am keen on trying out Android.
@markylit Would you agree that both are better in many ways than a regular phone?
