Have you been victim to "peasant mentality" (details)

Asked by Neizvestnaya (22667points) May 11th, 2011

Have you ever dismissed doing/having something because you’ve assumed it was beyond your means and then later learned you could in fact have it?

It drives me nuts that I have to where I’ve now made myself a damned bucket list, making myself investigate all the things to see which are in fact feasible.

Example 1
I’m in my 40’s now and have always wanted to take a cruise but thought it impossible. Imagine my shock when I looked on the magical internet to discover I could take a cruise and enjoy excursions for the same $ spent on plane tickets, rental cars, motel/hotels, restaurants, blah-blah I’ve done on other home based trips. Argh!

Example 2
A relative of mine never looked into retiring before 70yrs old but recently discovered he could retire this year and the offset of what his income will be in relation to what working fulltime yields is negligible. He’s so excited.

What will you make yourself get working on?

I think everyone is in some sense, although I do envy people that seemed to have developed that personality of “The world is mine, I can accomplish anything!”. It took me awhile to realize how much of an effect I can have on my own comfort and pleasure by simply speaking up for myself. I always figured I was too quiet and weak to speak up, or defend myself, or just generally tell someone I don’t like what they’re doing. One of the reasons I got married was because I let my ex-wife talk me into it and just surrendered instead of putting my foot down and telling her how I really felt. I could have avoided $12,000 worth of debt and kept my youthful innocence as well as my bank account if I just stood up for myself lol.

I still aim my expectations too low.

@Blackberry: I envy those people too and have always scolded myself by thinking I’m being cautious or practical.

@Blackberry: Yup. Next year I start some med training I wish I could have done 25 yrs ago instead.
