What do you do, if anything, to prepare for a "damaging" thunderstorm?

Asked by Aster (20028points) May 11th, 2011

#1 Coward here. We’re supposed to get a damaging thunderstorm tomorrow and I want to do everything I can to prepare. I’m glad the house is brick. What would you do if you knew this was coming your way?

We get these all the time. In fact, we are under a severe thunderstorm watch at the moment. I keep on eye out and check The Weather Channel and their website. My husband works outside and it helps for him to know if he needs to take cover. It also dictates what types of activities he may need to do at the ranch.

At home, I make sure there aren’t any toys outside that might blow away. We unplug the computer if a storm with lightening is very close.

I get really excited and shut off all of the lights and open all of the blinds. Then I go outside….

@ANef_is_Enuf Outside, you say? You walk outside? yikes. Well, we have lots of huge trees and the branches can break off so needless to say…...lol

I’d make sure stuff outside that could cause damage is secure and figure out the safest place in the house. Get a radio preferably battery capable. Watch the National Weather Service if you can.

@Aster I am the biggest sissy in the world. I’m afraid of everything, I’m a huge worry-wart. When it comes to storms I get an idiotic rush of courage. I don’t understand it, but I embrace it since it is such a rarity for me.

I would make sure my blinds are open so I can watch the lightening and enjoy the storm.

I like to live on the edge, so I track the storm cells on the weather Channel web site. Yeah, I know I’m not supposed to be on the computer…

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

Oh! Yes, I do that, too @JilltheTooth. I love to watch the radar and update everyone I know like some kind of maniac.

JilltheTooth's avatar

I also feel the urge to shower during T-storms…like I said, livin’ on the edge!
@ANef_is_Enuf : I also call people that live a mile away and ask if they know it’s thundering. All IQ points seem to be eradicated by the electrical charge in the air…

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

@JilltheTooth just another reason that you need to live closer to me.

There is something beautiful about lightning.

I make sure I know where the generator is and check that I have at least few gallons of gasoline handy. I check the flashlights and put them someplace obvious. I put candles in a few rooms and leave a pack of matches next to each one.
If there’s time, I make sure the dishes are all clean and the laundry is done.

When the house is ready, I can truly sit back and enjoy the fireworks.

I pop popcorn and sit in the sun room and watch the fireworks! I love watching lightning!

Hey, I glad to see others don’t stay away from the windows. There’s an elevator in this building with the outside wall made of glass. Last storm I took it to the top floor. Wow, what a show.

crisw's avatar

I unplug all electronics and make sure I can get to the candles and matches. We only get these every few years in San Diego!

@ANef_is_Enuf You can come with me to get my daughter from the bus stop at the end of our drive. It looks like a nice storm is going to hit us in about 20 minutes, just when the bus is going to drop her off! I don’t mind the rain, it’s the lightening that scares me.

dxs's avatar

@jonsblond I unplug everything not just the computers haha. I also hear that urinating is bad because the sewer lines are connected somehow or whatever. But if you gotta go you gotta go I guess.. Also, staying clear of the windows is good. I personally don’t really do anything other than unplug everything, as they are not too severe where I am now. I actually like to go outside during them because I love the humidity believe it or not.

jonsblond's avatar

@dxs Yeah, we should unplug the tv too, but I’m a radar freak like some of the others. ;) We do make sure to not let anyone take a bath or shower during a storm. I’ve also heard you shouldn’t do dishes.

Aster's avatar

I just knew this would happen when the generator went out. I call and call but he won’t show up. and he’s a grouch.

faye's avatar

I put my favorite plants away and try to cover my tomatoes, then I sit back and enjoy!

Aster's avatar

Well, at least ALL of you stay home. I don’t hear anything about driving in one? /:

Climb on the roof with my grandad’s blow up doll (bless, it’s all he can get.) Then just as lightning strikes I yell, life, oh good god in heaven give it life!!! Well, it’d give him someone to talk too after….you know? XD

I was so anxious about the storm coming I didn’t realize I wrote lightening instead of lightning. (hate it when I do that) That was some storm that just blew through. The farmers have been in the fields the past two days. so all the dirt has been stirred up. We literally had a dust storm as the front moved in, right when I went outside to get my daughter. I’m still crunching on dirt that’s in my mouth. It was pretty cool to watch as it moved in.

First thing I do when one is announced, is to look at the sky often. At the first sign of clouds, or if I hear faraway thunder, I turn off and unplug all my electrical stuff. Then I sit out on the balcony with a smoke and enjoy the show, unless it’s too violent. Once, a tree fell in the yard here. That was scary, eep.

Turned out to be nothing. Some rain, distant thunder, that was it. ((-;
