What's a good company that makes laptop backpacks?

You can find Land’s End (good brand and reasonable price) laptop backpacks on eBay.

llean apex has a padded pocket(even the bottom) at the back, and a hard back panel so your rig doesn’t poke you in the back.
You’d probably want to supplement with a sleeve that fits your laptop. Cut up a retired yoga mat a couple inches bigger than your computer and double-stick tape the edges together make it big enough to wrap around the opening like an envelope.

Unfortunately, they are not cheap. They are waterproof and quite stylin’, however.

I would go with LL Bean. My daughter’s still carrying her backpack from 1st grade, and she’s out of grad school. The other one had hers recently replaced for free because the zipper broke. She got hers the same time her sister did, so it must be about 15 years old.
