What is the first note in 6th position on the cello's A string called?

Asked by monovuelo (55points) May 12th, 2011

I’m re-teaching myself cello after a 10 year “hiatus” and I’m having difficulty remembering what the first note in C-clef (6th position) is called—is it G?

I don’t really understand the question, but I’ll take a guess.
If the “positions” are a half-step apart (like frets on a fretted instrument) then the sixth position on an A string would be D#.
Apologies if I’ve misunderstood your question; I don’t play cello.

Hi koanhead, thank you for the response. I ask the question, because the notes in 6th position actually defy this logic of the half-steps from F (on the second-from-top line, part of the bass-clef most cello music is written in) because notes in the 6th position are notated in C-clef (tenor) thus starting with “C” on the on the second-from-top line—I keep psyching myself out, about what note this really is… check this out http://www.celloonline.com/cellofingeringchart.htm
