Donate to your favorite charity with a twist...

Asked by blueiiznh (16703points) May 14th, 2011

Suppose that income taxes still had to be paid, but instead of going to the government, your tax dollars would go to any cause of your choice.
Assuming money would have to go to the same place each year, where would you want it to go?

I don’t know, I’d have to better research some charities before making such a commitment – but I love the idea.

Wife and I donate a lot to different charities. Our main charity is Goodwill(or it use to be). Goodwill has taken an action for themselves, rather than the workers they represent. It use to be that good bargains could be located at Goodwill, if you knew your junk. Goodwill wised up and began selling items on ebay. I am for this and I am against it. I am for it, so the people who have to stay at home because of a physical mental hadicap, can also buy online, from Goodwill. I amaginst this, because Goodwill takes the better donated items and places them online.

During the civil riots, in Nashville in 1968, the only people that showed to give the officers hot dogs, coffee and doughnuts were people from The Salvation Army.

From that day forward, the Salvation Army has received all of my cash and misc. donations.

We would still need things like police and things of that sort, its a great concept but I don’t think people would choose to pay the people who help and protect them. Without our tax $$ how would these things get paid in this thought process?

I would like though choice in schooling and have taxes paid made available to be directed to whatever school you wanted your child to go to, this would make public schools actually work for their money and maybe the output in education would be better.

The New York Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (why this isn’t a national org, I don’t know).

The National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. I wish I’d known about this place as a child. Perhaps some people in my family would’ve been able to find the help they needed that much sooner.

To animal rescues and battered womens/childrens shelters, and, towards international poverty.

This is tough, but if my contribution were to go to one cause every year I would make it support for family farms and ranches. Not the current subsidies plans but zero-interest loans for equipment and mortgage forgiveness during times of natural disasters for the small producers. I feel it’s very important that not all of our food comes from corporate farms. This corn brought to you courtesy of Dow and Monsanto!

I would want the ability to change where it went from year to year.

Also, I would not want my taxes to go to charity. I want them to go for restoring and maintaining infrastructure.

@boffin You’re in for a mind-blowing experience. It’s an absolutely beautiful place of love and calm. I found it more restorative for my spirit than any fancy spa could be. I can’t wait to go back.
