Why does the honey bottle warn "Do not feed to children under one year of age"?

Asked by RealEyesRealizeRealLies (30960points) May 14th, 2011

Just noticed this while squirting a little honey bear on my afternoon oatmeal. I’ve never noticed it before and would not have hesitated to sweeten the baby food with it.

Why is this warning on there? Am I the last person to know this?

It can cause infant botulism.Very young infants are more susceptible to the bacteria. I have also heard that it can contribute to food allergies later, but I have no idea if that is actually true.

Children under 1 are not supposed to eat honey. There are a few “rules” like that. I think it also is said that children under 2 are not supposed to eat corn or peanuts.

I never knew about any of that when Katawgrey was little. I’m amazed I didn’t kill her!

It probably isn’t common that it aggravates a little one’s system…but random stuff happens.

Maybe it’s too thick for them to swallow. I suppose peanut butter may fall under this category as well.

Why are babies so easy to kill!!!?!?!!

downtide's avatar

@MyNewtBoobs more to the point, why are they more easy to kill now than they were last generation, or the one before?

and what’s up with all these lame children’s cartoons nowadays?

When you are preganant than then have the baby, the amount of information that you get told about what not to eat or feed the baby is off the scale. There is good evidence to support these rules and the health professionals are doing their duty by telling you. After that though, it’s up to you to make your own decisions based on the evidence and your wishes
