Why do I have this twitchy, spasmy reaction to some pot?

Asked by MyNewtBoobs (19069points) May 15th, 2011

Sometimes, when I smoke pot, I get twitchy. And spasmy. But like, really teeny, tiny spasms. It’s like smaller parts of muscles – smaller than I can control on my own – are just twisting into knots. I had a similar, although much more serious, reaction to being on Topomax.

But here’s the weird thing: It doesn’t happen every time. If it happens with one batch, it’ll always happen with that. But I don’t know if it’s the strain, or perhaps the fertilizer used, or what. I’ve had both Indica and Sativa ones that don’t do it to me.

So, why is this happening, and is there a name for this reaction, possibly with a corresponding Wikipedia page?

I don’t know, but I would stick to a source that doesn’t leave you twitching.

@Mamradpivo Lol I’m trying…

I recall reading something about marijuana causing the body to lose some of it’s ability to absorb certain vitamins. Some people take a multivitamin and the twitching goes away within the hour. It could just be that you are experiencing a bit of vitamin deficiency.

And, the twitching is normal enough that it happens to a good number of pot smokers.

@PluckyDog Huh. That seems weird, because the twitching happens within about a minute of getting high, but you’d think for a vitamin deficiency it’d be longer. But, I just drank some Emergen-C so let’s see…

I have been growing and smoking weed for 12 years now, and have never heard of this. My advice would be to stop smoking the stuff asap.

Im not a doctor, so I dont know, it could very well be a lack of vitamins, or it could be your nervous system being damaged.

Maybe pesticides?

@incendiary_dan It’s not outside the realm of possibilities – but, most of the stuff here is grown inside, so quite possibly not.

@poisonedantidote I don’t think it’s damaging to the nervous system. When I had the reaction on Topamax, no one thought it was an issue (in terms of causing long-term damage).

How about chemical fertilizers?

Could be that something is stimulating some nerves in a weird way.

I wish I had more to contribute, being a plant guy and all, but alas, not one that I have as much knowledge of.

Maybe we need a Fluther panel of pot testers to see for ourselves to get to the bottom of this. Of course we’ll all need to have some of that same batch to come to an accurate consensus.

@woodcutter That could be arranged.

@woodcutter I wonder if it would work if I made special baklava and shipped it out to everyone ;)
