How do "intelli-shade" makeups work?

Is it more than just the sunscreen one?

If “Intellishade” matches every skin tone, every time then it must simply turn transparent upon curing, allowing underlying skin tone to show through. Big deal.

Maybe (though I seriously doubt it) there are perpendicular nano-fibers to render an image of underlying skin on the surface of even a thick coating, as some mineral crystals can do. There’s no way they use anything as complex or sophisticated as chromatophores to dynamically adjust tint.

@gasman This sort of make-up does even out my skin tone. Simply turning transparent would mean my nose and cheeks would still look red. Interesting question.

Well, then maybe it’s some kind of optical diffuser that smooths out blemishes of a certain size by optical blurring. Imagine a translucent, but not transparent, outer layer. Most of the light rays still get through, but the material gives them slight random changes in direction which causes some blurring, similar to a ground glass filter. A lot of polymer gels turn translucent on drying.

Is this supposed to be some kind of makeup breakthrough? Is everything else basically opaque & hence must be shade-matched?
