Why does my internet keep disconnecting?

Asked by jumpenpro (16points) May 15th, 2011

Hello,
I just formatted my pc because i had a virus and it is now back in it’s original status. The cable guy was here a week ago and installed a 32.000 internet. I am connected to the internet via cable that inputs the internet into our electrical network and from there i can directly get it to my computer from the socket one floor below the router(my room).
before the cable guy was here and before my pc was formatted(before virus[and with 2.000 internet])i had a good sustained internet connection, but now i can’t even watch a normal stream without it cutting off or i can’t even finish 2–3 mins of an online ego shooter because every couple mins or so my internet breaks off and i get kicked!!?? please someone help me fix this problem.

Not sure what those figures are for the Internet (2000 and such). Sounds like a shitty setup to me, unless you don’t know what you are talking about by electrical network.

jumpenpro's avatar

yeah sorry about that stuff i live in germany now and havent in the usa since 6 years now.
here there are different speeds of internet you can get from the supplyers—>32.000 is the fastest internet here in germany and 2.000 is pretty much the slowest you can get. and the electrical network thing is how i connect my computer to the internet. its a little box that you connect to your router wth an ethernet cable and then plug the box into the wall. and then in my room if the sockets are on the same circuit i can plug a second box into the wall in my room and then with an ethernet cable from the box to my computer.

@jumpenpro Yeah, that’s a wierd setup, sending the ethernet conenction through the outlet doesnt sound like a good idea. Can you not hook a router up to the phone line and connect to that?

jumpenpro's avatar

i dont have a phone socket in my room so i can pretty much only do it like this or wlan

XOIIO's avatar

@jumpenpro I would switch to wireless if I were you.

jaytkay's avatar

Can you move the computer or router and connect them directly for testing? That way you can test whether the problem is the AC wiring or something else.

Ethernet over AC wiring is HomePlug or Powerline in the US.. It’s uncommon in the US, as @XOIIO suggests, wireless is much more common.

I think the German equivalent is G.hn or HomeGrid .

Update: Reading further, I see that G.hn is very new so probably we are talking about the German version of HomePlug.

i tried switching to wlan and its showing 4of 5 bars for signal but it still breaks off every couple minutes. i know its not an ac problem because it worked before with the slower internet and before i formatted my pc.

i know its not an ac problem because it worked before with the slower internet

I would not make that assumption. You may be right, but without testing, we are just guessing.

jumpenpro's avatar

alright i will test it but i dont wanna unplug everything down here so im just gonna wait till my mom gets home and then i can test it on her labtop, but your right better safe than sorry:)

jaytkay's avatar

then i can test it on her laptop

That is a good plan.

Okay, I haven’t asked a dumb question all day so I may as well ask my dumb question of the day here.

You say your PC just got reformatted to it’s original status, but are you sure that that includes having the right drivers for your network interface and the proper settings for it? I ask merely because I have screwed myself up that way a few times after reformatting late at night only to remember that very basic thing the next morning.

XOIIO's avatar

@jerv is right, go to computer management and check that all the drivers are there, and check online for drivers for your device.

@XOIIO just to let you know what she means by 32.000 and 2.000, in the UK (and possibly Germany/Europe too) our internet speed is measured by MBPS, so 32mbps compared to the very early broadband speed of 2mbps. Top speed in retail broadband in the UK right now is 54mbps.

clean all ur viruses and have a try again.

jumpenpro's avatar

i connected the pc directly to the router now and everything is running perfectly i never disconnect but when i go downstairs and use the wlan the problem is back

jumpenpro's avatar

and im pretty shure that all the drivers are installed because i have formatted the pc often before and then i just installed the drivers with the cd’s that came with the pc and it had always worked before.

jaytkay's avatar

There will be Microsoft updates newer than your CDs. You may have to run Windows Update several times before everything is installed.

XOIIO's avatar

@trickface Ahh, I didn’t know that those figure were megabytes. Thanks.

@jaytkay is right.

jumpenpro's avatar

i ran the windows update manager as often as it found new updates so i already updated to the newest versions.

jaytkay's avatar

Does Control Panel -> System show “Service Pack 3”?

jumpenpro's avatar

no it says service pack 2 but there are no more updates available it says i’m on the newest version. i have windows vista home premium.

jaytkay's avatar

Ahh, Vista. My error. I was thinking XP.

jerv's avatar

Vista… why do I get the feeling that that explains why things aren’t working?

XOIIO's avatar

@jerv no kidding

jumpenpro's avatar

hm damn well it worked before… annyone got some more suggestions?

XOIIO's avatar

get a really long Ethernet cord, and tape along the bottom of the walls to your room for now.

jumpenpro's avatar

:) ive already thought about that but i don’t think they come that long and if it will even work if it’s that long

Tropical_Willie's avatar

I’m in the USA and have a “hard-wire” Ethernet PC on a 50 foot CAT6 upstairs. Works fine, make sure to get CAT6.

jumpenpro's avatar

alright i’ll try that thanks

jaytkay's avatar

If the ethernet wire is convenient, I would go with that, it’s more reliable and simpler.

But I had another idea about the HomePlug and wireless.

I had one wireless card which seemed to require I install the manufacturer’s software. Every other wireless adapter I know worked fine with built-in Windows software. But this one card required the manufacturer’s control panel and tasktray application.

So downloading and installing the mfg’s application (not just the drivers) might work.

Hope you got it working.

jumpenpro's avatar

well after a realy long time of just trying everything out i finally got it working to some extent.
I am still not shure if every driver is updated properly so i wanted to ask if annyone knew of a free programm that scans your pc and updates all obsolete drivers. i know that there are ones like drivermender and driver detective but you have to pay to have the drivers updated automaticly.

What is the exact make/model of the laptop? That will help us make sure you have all the drivers you need.

jerv's avatar

I was wondering exactly what Wi-Fi adapter it had, but I think you told me enough to narrow it down.

jumpenpro's avatar
