Why are people willing to keep themselves up in one way, but not another (Details will help)?

Asked by Facade (22937points) May 16th, 2011

I don’t hesitate to spend time on my hair, makeup, skin, etc., but can’t seem to exercise consistently.
Why does this happen?
People will go get haircuts, and skin treatments. We’ll brush our teeth, wear presentable clothing, and make sure we smell nice. We’ll do all of this in an attempt to look our best, but (some able-bodied) people won’t exercise. Why? It seems like a waste to me.

I don’t like exercising… simply because I’m lazy, and I’m always tired. I really should make an effort to get myself back in shape, but I don’t.

Different parts of the brain are involved.

For me, it’s just about which things I enjoy doing. When I find an exercise routine that I actually enjoy, I’m more willing to do it, but forcing myself to do a routine that I really don’t like is hard to do because I can easily find other things I need to do instead.

Well, now that Survivor ended last night I might exercise more.

Actually exercise is just inconvenient. You have to get dressed and go to the gym and be around buff dudes that look at you funny because you can only bench 80 pounds. And it costs a fortune.

It is part of the reason I don’t drive. I can bike everywhere or walk. And I keep weights by my desk. They were 20 bucks at Target. If I am reading a article while sitting at my desk I will do curls or just wave the weights around like a madman.

It reminds me of a few things. One, as a Cosmetics buyer and Manager I learned that in America we sell much more color than treatment compared to Europe. What that means is the Europeans focus more on the health of their skin, and American seem to purchase product that covers up the flaws from a lack of healthy skin. Two, I use the expression each person spends money in their own way and I think it is true about time also. With limited time we triage what must be done. To go to work at most offices we have to have a reasonable hairstyle, clothes and look presentable in general. So, if you cannot skip those things, the thing that might get skipped is exercising. You can’t go to the gym and then just pull your hair back in a ponytail and show up at work.

Plus, I agree with @Seaofclouds it is easier when it is exercise I enjoy, and when it is very convenient. If I have to drive far, or am bored while exercising I hate it.

Exercise is hard. Makeup isn’t.

Exercise= Get sweaty, maybe calloused, stink up an inside room, dirty up another set of clothes every day, feel sore.

Makeup= Leisurely and gently spiff yourself up, smell nice, dress nice, be pampered.

Kudos for honesty, I suppose… How about just taking a walk everyday?

@JLeslie That’s just another example of how Europeans are doing things right, and most of us Americans are not.

@Facade – Believe me, I’m workin’ on it! 10 miles on the bike this morning!

@Facade Eh, the Europeans still smoke more I think.

Sometimes it is a time management issue.

Its about what is important to themselves and where do they place their priorities.

I can answer this backwards, I guess? When I’m physically capable, I exercise, but I never have worn makeup or spent particularly long doing my hair or anything. For me the logic is sound – one affects my health, the other just affects my appearance.

I think some other people above me nailed it for the reverse: exercise is a lot of effort, makeup (usually) not so much.

Because, we all fall into two primary groups, either somatic ( body indentified ) or Cerebral ( mind, intellectually identifed )

It’s all about finding the balance.

I have gone through major body phases but, am primarily a brainiac type, it is easy for me to gain weight because I much prefer to spend my time learning, writing, drawing, creating.

Obviously I feel my best when the balance is balanced, but…I also ‘accept’ I have two modes…overworked and underweight, and underworked and overweight. I am trying to come back to center, again, now. lol
