Have you ever done an act of self-castigation?

Asked by rebbel (35553points) May 16th, 2011

Have you ever physically hurt yourself, as a form of punishment?
If you care to elaborate, why?
If not, can you imagine, or understand, that other people do it?
The only time that I can recall is when I punched my fist against a door when I realized that I had gone too far in a (verbal) fight with my (then) girlfriend.

I’ve deprived myself of sleep and food over a breakup before. I was convinced there was something wrong with me. I can understand why people would do such things; the stress of today’s society is so much greater than it used to be.

I used to cut myself when I was younger. I was only 14, I came from an abusive family, and I was adopted that same year, so I had a lot going on. It was just soothing to me.

In high school, I always used to punch lockers to see if I could put dents in them. I just did it for fun, even though it hurt like hell.

I set fire to my pubes in a drunken state once, I think it was Texas XD
Anyway, I wouldn’t recommend it, the wind changed & well…..talk about bush fire, whoosh!

I go to the dentist on my birthday, partially because of self loathing.

No, I have only engaged in hateful self talk.

I do not understand the impulse to hurt oneself.

I used to cut myself when I was about 14. I hadn’t heard about teenagers doing it, it just came from a mixture of feelings. I made a 8-piece segmented circle on the inside of my left elbow with a razor blade, I think it was for the hell of it. I was alone at the time. I am still not sure why. Another time, I was drinking while cutting school at a friend’s house, and i accidentally dropped a bottle of beer, which smashed on the floor. i laughed and picked up a sharp piece of glass and sliced the inside of my right arm with it. i have a huge gnarly scar from it still. Not sure why I did that either.

To punish myself, no. When I was in school I used to slit the top of my hands with scissors to gross people out. It was pretty cool lol.
I can’t think of anything else, but I knew this dude who was trying to stop smoking. Everytime he gave in, he burned himself with his cigarette. Bad burns, too. As far as I know, it didn’t help him quit, but I could see he was serious, although I didn’t think he was taking the best approach here. I kept my gob shut about my opinion, but I did tell him he should prolly be careful not to fuck himself up too bad. Some people hurt themselves to relieve emotional pain, maybe that’s what he was doing, but under another guise.

I totally read this as “self-castration”

As a form of punishment? No.

@MyNewtBoobs I read it as the same thing.

Yes, I used to cut mself when I was younger. It began as self-punishment, but soon spiralled and became quite addictive. It took years to break the habit, if you will.
I suppose the underlying reasons had a lot to do with not feeling able to verbalise my feelings among other things. Now, I’m thankful that those days are behind me.

Nope, never did (except accidentally once).. You see, I considered myself a real tough guy (when young) so I would slam walls and doors and even telephone posts with my fist whether I was angry or not, then one night I got kinda peeved about.. whatever, and slammed my fist into the living room wall but this time I connected with an unseen nail head.. THAT was the last time I ever slammed anything.

I reward myself way more than I punish myself, and I’m a masochist. :D
