How does this sort of mentality thrive? (See details)
I saw this quote “Can u spare just €2? Ranji is a 24yr old Muslim man in Pakistan. He has one leg, one arm and one eye. Each day he has to ride 7 miles for water along a narrow road on a rusty bike with bent wheels, no brakes and only one pedal. If you send us just €2, we will send you the dvd – it’s fucking hilarious!” on Facebook, just now. So far it has 13,000 “likes.”
That is 13,000 people that have endorsed this statement.
I am pretty sure that I have a sense of humor, but I don’t understand this. Am I being uptight? Do you think this is funny?
What makes otherwise decent people think nothing of sharing a comment like this with their friends?

A cruel parody—but I am sure no one is laughing at a real person’s plight.
How could a one-legged, one-armed man ride a bicycle?
Because lots & lots & lots of people are thick as fucking pig shit that’s why!
Sad thing is, they think they’re being “cool”.....yeah right!
I wouldn’t take one step to see something like that. It’s so dumb!
@anartist I know (or, at least highly suspect) that this isn’t about a real person. It just seems like making it up simply to make this claim makes it even worse. I just don’t get it…. what makes people think that this is funny enough to click “like?”
Exploitive and in poor taste. ‘Nuf said.
“Ranji is a 24yr old Muslim man in Pakistan. He has one leg, one arm and one eye. Each day he has to ride 7 miles for water along a narrow road on a rusty bike with bent wheels, no brakes and only one pedal.”
When i read this i thought the next sentence would be: What time he arrives in Islamabad?
If he only has one leg, he only needs one pedal.
Almost sounds like the next Nigerian lottery scam.
Yeah, that sounds like a scam that is not deserving of a second thought from you! ;)
Just to clarify, it isn’t an actual site. It is just a statement. There is no additional information.. it is just one of those random sites with statements that people can “like” from their Facebook. You just “like” the statement itself, nothing else.
That is disgusting. Anyone who sent me that would be likely to get unfriended.
Yeah, I know what you’re talking about. It isn’t funny but it’s been around for a lot longer than this latest FB incarnation. I believe it originated as a sarcastic response to the sentimental glurge that clogs up inboxes. Kind of like Leaf Boy
@Blueroses I’ve never seen the Leaf Boy thing, but I’m sure you’re right about the origin.
@rebbel: As I read, that’s what I was thinking! I would refuse to view the video, it just seems too sad and I know I wouldn’t laugh. Reading the statement and embellishing that it’s a lead up to a math puzzler, that’s funny to me.
There’s no accounting for taste, or the moral outrage that a joke can generate.
Not everyone is kind-hearted… some people delight at other people’s misery. Making a joke of someone else’s handicap is disgusting.
I don’t know what’s worse, this man’s plight as being true or the fact that he is being exploited and people are excited? It thrives because stupidity is highly contagious even more so in the world wide web of idiots.
What makes you think they are 13,000 “otherwise decent people”?
I run on the theory that 85% of people are petty, cruel, shallow and/or narcissistic – all the while lacking in compassion.
*shrugs
It doesn’t affect me either way. I don’t think it’s particularly funny, and I’m not outraged by it. It’s just… a dumb joke about someone who doesn’t actually exist.
Keep in mind I have spent years on 4chan and I am not outraged or offended by anything as a result.
@cprevite I don’t assume that they are 13,000 otherwise decent people. But I can speak for the people on my friend’s list that clicked the “like” button that resulted in me seeing this statement at all.
@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard I’m not offended, I’m confused.
@ANef_is_Enuf most people are just retarded. That’s all there is to it, really.
I’m with @Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard – it is just one of those things. The world will never be free of people who think dumb shit is funny.
And I never cease to be astounded at what kids “like” on facebook. Some of it is so crude, some cruel and most nonsensical.
If a friend of mine “liked” this it certainly wouldn’t bother me seeing as, chances are very strong that it’s not based on a real situation but just playing on how the human race often laughs at anothers misfortune bu describing the worlds unluckiest person/circumstance!
not based on a real situation
Exactly. The story is so obviously hyperbolic that I don’t see how anyone is mistaking this for a joke at anyone’s expense.
Yes, I am aware that shit much worse than this happens to people in the third world and elsewhere all the time, bu that’s not the point I’m trying to make here.
Just to clarify my view. It’s blatantly obvious that this is an unsubtle, crude “joke”, that much is abundantly clear. I just think the underlying current though is that “hey, it’s funny to laugh at the muslim cripple.” Just my tuppence worth, that’s all.
@anartist I agree. I keep leaf boy bookmarked to send to the people who never met a forward they didn’t like and who refuse to do any research on the glurge before they send that garbage to me :)
