What do you know about Hofstra University?
I applied there and I really liked the curriculum they have for my major. I have not visited the school yet, as I live on the opposite coast, but I will be visiting the schools I am accepted to over the summer. I am a bit worried because their retention rate is not as high as the other schools I applied to. So, have any of you been there, attended or know someone who did? If so, what did you (or the other person you know) think of it? I know that visiting will be the last determining factor, but I just want some background info on it first. Thank you all!

The Good Francis Ford Coppola and James Caan, both of whom worked on the famed Godfather movie, graduated from there.
The Bad Bernie Madoff also graduated from there.
I have always heard of Hofstra in connection with their graduate schools. It’s in a very small town, and that could be a factor for its retention rate. I couldn’t link it, but US News and World Report’s online guide to top schools includes student comments, which had to do with classrooms that look like NYC public schools, student apathy, the town not having much to do, consistent problems with student billing, limited housing options for upperclassmen; freshmen get the best dorms their first year, and cannot renew into the same space, not very diverse, food is overpriced, student apathy, gorgeous campus, good advising center, lots of great internship opportunities.
I seem to remember that they have a good Men’s lacrosse team. Without knowing much else about it and seeing the campus only once (a long time ago), I would guess that they have a lot of commuter students who either drop out or transfer to other schools. I don’t think that a lot of people cross the country to go there. Keeping in mind that I don’t really know what I am talking about, I would also say that I imagine that the culture there is very NY—specifically Long Island-y, for whatever that is worth.
