Yes metformin does help control blood sugar. It does this by stopping the liver from creating glucose out of other molecules. It also very effective at reducing the risk of complications and mortality from diabetes. It has a lower risk of causing hypo’s than other diabetes meds and is not thought to cause weight gain unlike several other diabetes meds.
That said it is not without side effects, like any other medication. The most common is an upset stomach but it can cause lactic acidosis, which is more seriosous, particulalry in people with inpaired liver and renal function.
I normally get the big “D”. My doctor never said any of this, they just said it blocks the bad stuff (chloresterol, sugar, too much sodium) from getting into my liver and kidneys. Right now I’m on 750mg twice a day. Is that enough?
It depends on what your blood glucose levels are like. Normally your doc will monitor you bloods and increase the dose until your glucose levels are kept at the desired level.
I am also on this medication, and am taking 1000mg twice daily and it keeps me sick but I havent been on this for over 3 weeks but one thing is that I do hope its helping cause I hate being sick
