If you have the money to buy a small island, would you? How will you enjoy it?

Asked by mazingerz88 (29195points) May 23rd, 2011

So Prince William and Kate Middleton honeymooned in a beautiful island. During the recession, some small Greek islands were said to be made available for foreign buyers. Nicholas Cage bought one ( not in Greece ) but as to whether he still owns it in light of his financial woes, who knows? But would you get one yourself if you have the means? What would you do with it? What name would you give it? ( added this question after reading @incendiarydan’s post )

One of the kids I teach lives some of the time on an island his grandfather owns. Edit: It’s in the freakin’ Bahamas, by the way.

Personally, I’d just live there growing, foraging, and catching my own food. Maybe declare it a sovereign nation of it’s own, and give it a silly name.

Neizvestnaya's avatar

Yes I would. It would be the homebase for my friends commune. I have no idea of the name except I know for sure screaming babies wouldn’t be allowed on it.

ddude1116's avatar

Hell, yes, I would! I could sit on it and meditate for hours!

I hate Islands….way too confining. Even St Thomas, St John and Roatan all large pieces of land I got to visit were finite….20 miles top to bottom or less is just too little land to feel comfy on. I need to know I can pack the SUV and go places more than an hour away. Can’t wait!!

mazingerz88's avatar

@Cruiser Or you can have a speedboat to get away from the island? But yeah, it’s all water out there. lol.

Cruiser's avatar

@mazingerz88 I tried that but you have to go back to get more beer and fuel….you are trapped on that patch of land no matter what! It drove me crazy!

mazingerz88's avatar

@Cruiser Fair enough. : )

YARNLADY's avatar

No, thank you. There are too many places I want to visit over time, and sitting on an island is not one of them. I want a large RV to travel the USA.

If I had the money to buy it, I’d probably have the money to put anything on it, so I would build everything I could think of that I would enjoy on that island and do everything I love. I’d buy a plane and build a landing strip so I could fly out and I could fly people in easily, and it would essentially be one big home with everything imaginable in it.

As an alternative to buying an island, I’ve more often dreamed of actually building my own island so I could put it anywhere I wanted and customize it to my liking.

An island of my own as a get-away would be nice if it was close to other islands or the mainland. But not as a permanent home, that would make me a little crazy, like @Cruiser.

Ajulutsikael's avatar

I’d buy an island and declare it a national preserve so no one could destroy it.

No, if I had that much money I’d take care of my extended family so that they’d have excellent health care, a nice home, and so that they’d never have to work again.

Then my wife and I might move to perhaps a suburb of Victoria, BC, which is on Vancouver Island, but I wouldn’t have any desire to own the whole Island.

Once we were there, I’d contribute whatever I could to the safety, cleanliness, environmental health, and prosperity of our community.

Absolutely. I’d have to have a plane, though. There would be guest houses, not too close to my own house, and they wouldn’t always be occupied. I’d buy a year’s supply of all the non-perishable stuff I need, and then sit back and enjoy the solitude. Oh! There’d have to be some way of getting internet access. Can we manage that? I’d name it AugustLand, of course. :)

I already live on an island, albeit a fairly large one, but yeah i’d be up for that. Of course i’d want the best of both worlds, coz i’m selfish like that. By that I mean i’d have all the comforts i’d need, food, shelter hot & cold running naked girl slaves, that kind of thing. I’d also want the seclusion & back to nature adventure vibe that a small isolated island affords.

Whats the use of buying an island when you have so much of money..Its more fascinating to go for a world tour rather. I would take my family to a world tour if I could have this much of money.

i have always dreamed of owning an island ,and living on it, but after reading some of these answers ,i’m not so sure anymore !!

Ditto @ucme “I already live on an island” but yes I’d buy an island in the faroe islands, Skuvoy would do just nicely & I’d build a huge house made of granite & a huge observatory too to watch the night skies :-)
The name would remain the same……

Blackberry's avatar

That’s too much upkeep. Why not just buy a house on an island.

WasCy's avatar

I wish I had the money to buy an elephant.

iphigeneia's avatar

I agree with @Ajulutsikael, if I bought an island, it would be to keep it safe for conservation purposes. Or maybe for hiding a secret underground lair.

No. With the rising waters of the world and warming climate, it would not be a good investment. I’d use the money for something else, like a condo in Rome or London.

HollyF's avatar

No. I don’t like beaches, so I would have no use for the island. I don’t like lonely places either.

YARNLADY's avatar

@Sunny2 That’s just what I was thinking.

I have fantacized about owning my own island since I was a child! It would have to have a beautiful beach and hopefully palm trees. My house would be very West Indies plantation style. Picture ceiling fans everywhere and a huge four poster mahogany bed! Louvered shutters and a balcony with a view of the ocean! A huge patio withstone pavers and trellises dripping with bougainvillia! There would be a medicinal herb farm and a nature preserve. I would keep it as an artists and writers retreat and then I would never want for interesting and lively company. Sigh….that all sounds so good. I need megabucks for this! When I dream, I dream big!

mazingerz88's avatar

@Earthgirl “trellises dripping with bougainvillea” Yes!

Neizvestnaya's avatar

@Magdalene: You can go on a world tour right now with someone else doing the driving, there are cruises that take you away for about 100 days for $25K, luxury all expenses paid kind.

I’d lurve that!

I’d buy an island on a northwoods lake somewhere in northern Wisconsin or on Lake Superior. The fishing would be amazing. I wouldn’t be too far from the mainland if I needed supplies, and I’d be snowed in during the winter. If I had the money to buy an island, I’d have enough money to be snowed in for several months. Sounds like heaven to me.

HollyF's avatar

@jonsblond You’d actually like to be snowed in?

jonsblond's avatar

@HollyF Yeah, you don’t know me very well yet. I love snow. =)

Welcome to Fluther!

WasCy's avatar

If all I had was rent money, I’d like to be snowed in for the winter with @jonsblond. I’m just sayin’ is all.

HollyF's avatar

@jonsblond I LOVE snow too! It’s just not the norm. Most people hate it.

mazingerz88's avatar

@jonsblond willing to be snowed in with enough supplies so I can finish my desk works and also do some winter fishing with this sparkling white realm around me. : )
