What is the shortcut in MS Word for "word count"?

I’m on a mac, using word 2008, and it’s driving me crazy that I have to go through the tool bar to get a word count. Anyone know the answer?

At least in Office 2011 you see something like this. Clicking on it will give your more info.

Thanks everyone (particularly John Powell). Turns out you can click on the word count on the bottom of the page to see the character count, which is what I was most interested in.
