I am not much of a question asker on Fluther, but I am curious to hear what sad songs you all like . . . could be an instrumental (I am a musician, so the song doesn’t need lyrics to resonate for me) or could be a song with lyrics. Please provide link to the lyrics or the music if you can.

This was the first one that sprung (sprang?) to mind.
@HungryGuy You answered How to Save a Life on my other question about an individual propensity for the maudlin . . .
@Cruiser Norah Jones has several excellent sad songs, but this one doesn’t make me sad . . .
@Cruiser I believe you may be right. What surprises me is that, of all the jellies I know, your answers above all most often parallel my own thoughts on any given subject!
Any Major Dude Will Tell You by Steely Dan
@Kayak8 I am most humbled by your comment! <<offers a doggie biscuit>>
Creep. Radiohead. Gets me every time.
Johnny Cash’s cover of Hurt made me weep the first time I heard it. I think Everybody Hurts also counts.
Queen – Love of my life
Johnny Cash – Hurt
Pearl Jam – Last Kiss
Sugarland – Stay
RHCP – Under the bridge
500 Miles ( I like the Rosanne Cash version)
Everly Brothers – Ebony Eyes
Also, Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins
@Joker94 Disarm? That song hit me like a freight train when I first listened to that album.
The Fray – How to save a life
From Mahler’s Kindertoten Lieder “Oft Denk Ich”. The lyrics of the songs are about the death of children. This one says, “I often think they’ve just gone out to play. It’s nice day and they’ve forgotten to come home. Yes, that’s it! They’ve just forgotten and it has gotten late without them noticing.” In my mind I can see the mother looking out the kitchen window and weeping. The music is kind of slow and haunting.
Brings tears to my eyes every time I hear it.
Morrissey’s seasick yet still docked is a definite wrist-slitter for me.
I am a poor freezingly cold soul
So far from where
I intended to go
Scavenging through life’s very constant lows
So far from where I’m determined to go
Wish I knew the way to reach the one I love
There is no way…
Wish I had the charm to attract the one I love
But you see, I’ve got no charm
Tonight I’ve consumed much more than I can hold
Oh, this is very clear to you
And you can tell I have never really loved
You can tell, by the way, I sleep all day
And all of my life no-one gave me anything
No-one has ever given me anything
My love is as sharp as a needle in your eye
You must be such a fool to pass me by…
Represented once but a second time is no hurt the great MJ Earth Song
Somewhere Down The Road by Barry Manilow has made me cry on more than one occassion.
Me and Little Andy by Dolly Parton is sad but very sweet.
Lonely Coming Down by Dolly Parton
Same Auld Lang Syne by Dan Fogelberg
Just A Dream by Carrie Underwood
Loch Lomond
I’m sure there are more that I have forgotten, I’ll probably be back!
9 crimes – Damien rice
Happiness – The fray
Stop crying your heart out – Oasis
Come home – OneRepublic
Bed of roses – Bon jovi
Last goodbye – The enemy
I don’t want to miss a thing – Aerosmith
Leaving, on a jetplane – John Denver
You could be happy – Snow patrol
Angel – Sarah McLachlan
Sinead O’connor – Nothing compares to you
That is just a few, there’s so many I love. I’m one of those who likes to bring myself more down if I’m already sad by putting on one of these songs… But I’m mostly sad because I’m missing someone, and then it’s nice to take some time being sad while thinking of the person whos not around you anymore.
oh, and Whiskey lullaby – Brad Paisley ft. Alison Krauss.
@kariper How could I forget Whiskey Lullaby?!
Dido’s lament (“When I am laid in earth”) from Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas.
Puff the Magic Dragon. : (
Probably anything by the Fray even though they are awesome and I Don’t want to Miss A Thing by Aerosmith. It’s just sentimental.
You all are good, there are some songs here I had never listened to before your recommendations.
@PluckyDog Loved the Tracy Chapman song you recommended (putting on my Ipod). @SavoirFaire Would never have stumbled over Dido’s Lament without your recommendation (love having a diverse and eclectic bunch of tunes!).
@kariper and @emeraldisles I had not listened to The Fray before your recommendations—good choice!
