Would you use Fluther differently if after a certain amount of larvae you were able to win prizes?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) May 28th, 2011

If Fluther allowed Jellies that got 20k and above the chance to win tangible prizes, (something of worth but not too expensive), would you work harder to get there if you are not there already, would you partner up with other Jellies to help you gain points faster or would you ignore it and conduct yourself as you always had?

Yeah. Differently as in not at all.

One of the best things about fluther is that lurve doesn’t mean anything.

And uh… larvae?

HungryGuy's avatar

I’m not an insect, so I wouldn’t know :-p

AmWiser's avatar

No. I am not competitive and I dislike competition. I also don’t think there would be a prize worthy of [REDACTED].

FutureMemory's avatar

Larvae…lol

everephebe's avatar

Auto-correct?

poisonedantidote's avatar

If the prize was just some token prize as if to say thanks, then it would not change anything. If the prize on offer were big enough (e.g. $10,000.00), it would cause me to change a few things.

I would then see it more as a business, or at least treat it like one. I would keep controversy to my self, I would pander to the audience, and would probably make lots of statements that everyone would agree with.

Instead of thinking up ways to put forward my genuine opinions, I would think up clever and poetic ways of saying “pedofiles are bad / equal rights for all / retarded people are cool / etc.”

Instead of answering questions I am interested in, I would answer all questions, I would spend some time on researching things, and would prepare copy and paste snippets for top positioning on the page.

It would probably be beneficial to the site owners, I would generate more content that is suitable for any audience, but originality and honesty would suffer big time.

Also, I would do this all on a seperate new account, I would not like to associate my face with those words. In fact, I would probably put up an avatar of an attractive female and follow all the males in hope of reciprocation and more lurve.

Oh yea, I would probably get busy with IP’s and things, create loads of accounts and give my self lurve.

If I set my mind on the prize, I go for the prize.

@everephebe No need, larvae is an excepted spelling according to Websters, Funk & Wagnalls for larva in plural

incendiary_dan's avatar

@Hypocrisy_Central I think @everephebe assumed you meant ‘lurve’.

FutureMemory's avatar

accepted not excepted.

I love it when people offer up suggestions on how to possibly improve on a process. Thank you for being open to do so

Nothing would change on my end. While I like getting a GQ or GA, I’d be fine if our total Lurve score didn’t show up on each post.

As for going for a tangible prize, a.) It wouldn’t motivate me any more than the Lurve for taking the time to craft an answer. b.) As much as I’d like to own a Fluther coffee mug or t-shirt, I’m willing to purchase one on my own and not create more work for Auggie and gang.

Do you think that there might be any downfalls if a tangible reward was connected to certain awards? Could it possibly lead to more cliques forming and/or change the quality of the responses?

gailcalled's avatar

So, is anyone volunteering to fund raise, provide prizes, administer the program and deal with the fallout?

I’m sitting on my hands.

HungryGuy's avatar

On that other site, they gave all the members who were there since the beginning a free tee-shirt :-)

I am a competitive person but I am not going to say that I like this idea here (yes, here,in fluther) since it’s harder for a commoner to fight their way for extra lurve.

I am not sure if lurving party has existed here. But I suspect there could be…

If I am going to fight for points (not here) that is merely for popularity reasons, not prizes.

I am not competitive here and have given up my hope to reach 10K. What could I get if I reached 10K? An imaginary mansion? I prefer titles that set apart your positions from other users (like the old AB). Even without title it seems that people here adopt a hierarchy based of the amount of lurve they’ve gotten.

There are, however, other QandA sites that give prizes for their competitive users. Most of them are paid sites.

@Pied_Pfeffer Do you think that there might be any downfalls if a tangible reward was connected to certain awards? Could it possibly lead to more cliques forming and/or change the quality of the responses? There are pitfalls to everything, there is nothing perfect. I am sure there will be new cliques formed, I would not say there are any open ones now, but some people unknowing have created de facto cliques. There will be those who try to have multiple accounts and even with the best software and efforts, some will get through the breech, if they continued to do that their deeds would be exposed hopefully. I am sure since the sponsors will benefit greatly over the long run they would have no compunction to tossing a few bones in the pile. If the prizes were $500 and less it might be a lot of work for someone

Berserker's avatar

Lol, larvae. Well, I probably couldn’t be arsed. I don’t really see how I could take some kind of significant control over my larvae distribution, unless someone agreed to spam my larvae. Or if I made another account and larvaed myself. But then I’d get the boot.
I’d certainly try to think of ways to make it advance further, if it meant I could change my username to Xena as a reward.

Cruiser's avatar

No…I would just can the extra larvae I earn and store them in the crawl space like I always have.

YARNLADY's avatar

I participate on sites that offer prizes and sites that don’t. I probably would answer more questions here if they were actually worth something.

Coloma's avatar

No. I don’t need any ceramic jellyfish statues, funky tee-shirts or other dorky prizes, thanks. lol

Buttonstc's avatar

The prize would definitely have to be insect repellent if I had 20K LARVAE accumulated instead of 20K LURVE.

That’s a heck of a lot of potential hatchlings to deal with if they all came to maturity at once.

And they’d better not be flea larvae. Been there, done that and got the Fromtline T-shirt.

:D

_zen_'s avatar

I laughed hysterically at larvae. Thanks for that.

Berserker's avatar

@zen That most certainly did rocketh. Larvae.

_zen_'s avatar

@Symbeline I know, eh? And @Hypocrisy_Central gave an even funnier explanation No need, larvae is an excepted spelling according to Websters, Funk & Wagnalls for larva in plural which in itself is worth the price of admission.

Sorry, @Hypocrisy_Central Everyone makes mistakes – I’m not laughing at you. I’ve made some serious errors, typos, spelling mistakes and big old booboos too. It comes with asking a lot of questions.

Buttonstc's avatar

@Symbeline

But after all it is the proper plural of larva (according to the dictionary, proclaims the OP).

Didn’t you read the explanation ?

:D

Berserker's avatar

Dudes I’m just thinking of Xena and baby bees, stop being all complicated on my ass.

_zen_'s avatar

Are baby bees considered larvae?

everephebe's avatar

Oh don’t make me get all woody allen up in your ass.
It’s LURVE dammit.
:D

Berserker's avatar

@zen Yup, every insect’s first state (besides the egg) is considered as such. Even if they have names like caterpillar, they’re still a larva before they transform/powermorph/upgrade into their final form.

And the first person who says I might like Pokemon is a dead Jelly.

_zen_'s avatar

I larvae this thread.

Berserker's avatar

Baby bees! So CUUUTE! And stingy.

augustlan's avatar

Larvae?

I highly doubt this is ever going to happen. We like the idea of helping others for the sake of helping others. There was a contest once, where we gave away a t-shirt, but it had absolutely nothing to do with the regular asking and answering of questions. I could see that happening again, but no lurve prizes.

OpryLeigh's avatar

I hope the lurve I get is due to the quality of what I write and so, because I have standards for myself I couldn’t write any old crap in the hope that I get lurve. I’m not saying prizes every so often wouldn’t be fun but it doubt very much that it would make a difference to how I use Fluther.

downtide's avatar

I wouldn;t want to participate in Fluther at all if it was all about money. I’d lose interest because as @poisonedantidote says, people would be giving answers that were deliberately tuned to gain more lurve, rather than just being an honest opinion. That would no longer interest me.

But I do think that larvae is an awesome substitute for lurve.

JilltheTooth's avatar

Oh, @augustlan , never? I would totally whore myself out for a Dr J coffee mug.

augustlan's avatar

I would pay to see that. :p

Buttonstc's avatar

@Symbeline

Yeah. Those stingy bees can be so penurious. They need to loosen up a little and learn to enjoy the finer things in life :)

A few luxuries every now and again never killed anybody.

jrpowell's avatar

I’m a Socialist!!! If I can help I want to. It makes me feel good, I don’t need a prize.

I started using this site when I asked a obscure question and got a response in 30 minutes. So I figured I would look around and see if I knew anything to help a person with question to return the favor. Turns out I found a few of them.

It is nice knowing if people found what I spout helpful. But I would be fine if lurve was private.

Coloma's avatar

Maybe if the prizes were customized to the individual.
I’d work hard to earn a free goose barn cleaning by a hot young man in a thong. lol

Now you see…Colomas inventive personality has targeted a potential marketing strategy. haha

syz's avatar

Larvae

Lurve

(I was seriosly kind – you should’ve seen some of the maggot photos I found!)

Dutchess_III's avatar

If Fluther gave me larva I’d QUIT this place!!

I might like Pokemon.
