How many characters does your phone allow in a picture message?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47069points) May 29th, 2011

With regular text I’m allowed 160 characters. However, I sent a picture message with text the other day and noticed that the phone allowed me 1000 characters (Yes, one-thousand. I had to do a double take.) What is up with that? And why can’t I get 1000 characters with regular text? I just checked again to make sure I wasn’t being stupid! Yes, 1000 characters.

I get 1000 as well. I believe its because it is sent as a multimedia text which takes up a lot more memory so you are able to have a higher character limit where as a normal text they cut you off at 160. I would imagine it costs more to send multimedia texts compared to normal ones so this is why normal is stuck at the 160. I may however be completely wrong in my reasoning.

Whenever I need to send long texts to people I just send it as a picture message without an image.
