At times like this, they should. You could contact the site owners on the contact page and see what they think.
No, we don’t get paid. That would be a sweet deal.
Well, at least three of them do. For the others, like @richard says, it’s apparently a voluntary labor o’ love.
mods don’t get paid? wow, and i get paid just for being logged into fluther…
Richardhenry, what would happen if I flagged your answer? Would you be assigned to take care of it?
I didn’t even know there were others, who all is one?
@iwamoto; why do you get paid for logging in?
it was a joke ;) although i could say i fluther @ work, but i don;t, i work hard :)
I’m sure @richard can provide the definitive list of Fluther Q&A Moderators… but those that I’m aware of are:
—richardhenry, of course.
—sndfreQ
—Andrew
—Ben
—Erik
That does not include the list of chatroom moderators.
It’s a few more than three.
They must have no life. I know I don’t. I have wasted lots of hours on this site.
In this question Riser made it seem like he was a moderator (or maybe just a chat room moderator- whatever that is). I’d actually like this cleared up by Ben, Andrew or Sferik.
omfgTALIjustIMDu is a moderator too.
and Tali is a very young genius…check out her age on her profile. There are several people here that I would like to adopt (you know who you are) and she is certainly one of them.
Fluther’s chatrooms are hosted by a 37 Signals’ service called Campfire.
Chatroom moderators only have chatroom powers.
To chat about Fluther operations, features, the stuff here in this thread, anyone can go to the Man o’ War chatroom. Even if no one else but you is in the room at the time, you can post a message there and the Fluther folks will eventually read it… it’s all stored in transcript.
For general discussion about the topics posted on Fluther, anyone can go to the Watering Hole chatroom, too. Great fun!
All these quips… and yet no answer to the original question. :-\
@fury and @richard, were you just tapped on the shoulder one day and asked, “Would you like to slave your life away doing Fluther mod work?” Or did you volunteer on your own?
I don’t think any of us knows, exactly. I’d wager it was different for everyone. Plus, richardhenry already answered that we don’t get paid.

As far as chat room moderation, Andrew instant messaged me, asking me if I wanted to help (considering I am in there often.)
I would think you would have to be very open-minded in order to be a mod! If youknowconner was a mod he would have everything jacked up. I have seen him in numerous threads complaining about subjects that are clearly within the guidelines! Only to get moded himself, for his incessant complaints.
@youknowconnor: Every moderator receives flag notifications, so if I was doing silly things worthy of being flagged then I’d be “fired”. :) If you were just flagging it for fun then nothing would happen.
@mirza: There are nine moderators, including Andrew, Ben and Erik and the chat room moderators.
@robmandu – Essentially, yes. Although I’m still the baby of the group in terms of time spent, so I’m hardly slaving away my life.
Be good, don’t answer questions you have no idea what it means, and don’t ask to be moderator in a question….?
@scamp…...ya….ummmm…..ya I’m new….sure.
I think mods are like the bank guy on “deal or no deal”
@Hollister: Gee, thanks. That’s real kind.
sorry bro. I just had to pick at you since I am sure you canned my question at some point. Lol. Any way your still the guy with the best answers.
Ohno! We’ve been outed! Take cover!
For once in my life, can’t I out myself?
@Riser… lmao!
And for the record, it weren’t me… I just made an oblique reference. ;-)
“Eambos: Fluther site (and chat) mods have access to backlogged chats, so leave your comment in man o’ war and one of us will make sure the proper Jellies are notified.
Highest Regards,
Riser”
(from the question I linked earlier)
i.e. you outted yourself Daniel. :)
Congratulations.
Good point Breedmitch, but if I don’t have something to complain about… well I just can’t continue to be a member of this mortal Earth. :P
I’d love to contribute here but I’m pretty sure it would just be deleted anyway
i don’t think i’d have the time to be a mod, and i think i’d be too hard on kids…..
Ok, so did anyone actually find out how to become a moderator?
Well, you asked two questions, so which was he saying yes to? A tap on the shoulder of volunteer?
heh… yah, I think so. That’s how I took it.
oops, that was supposed to be “or”, and you still didn’t tell me which one haha
ah… I read that “of” as “to”, as in “A tap on the shoulder to volunteer?”
I read @soundedfury’s reply to say that they were invited by the Fluther founders to moderate.
Oh ok, thankyou for clarifying, yeah sorry about the of. So I couldn’t ask to be one, I’d have to be asked?
I imagine you can always ask, but from what I’ve deduced, they like to pick folks on their own.
Yeah I reckon, I don’t want to ask, I was just curious. I think it means more if they pick. Thanks
